Rules ??? Failing To Hunt

THE RULES SAY'S ; FAILING TO MAKE ANY ATTEMPT TO HUNT WITHIN ANY 15 CONSECUTIVE SCORECARD MINUTES.

"""DEFINE"""---MAKING ANY ATTEMPT.

I HAD A MAN SAY ON A U.K.C. NT.CH. CAST, THAT IF A DOG IS STANDING BESIDE YOU AND IT (THE DOG) PUTS IT NOSE TO THE GROUND THAT IS AND ATTEMPT TO HUNT.-----THANKS

In my opinion, a dog smells of things all the time. Does that mean it is making an attempt to hunt? No, because a male dog may smell of ten trees and pee on every one of them. I don't break the time until I feel the dog is actually hunting. Most of us have been around enough hounds to know if they are really putting forth an effort to find a track or just wondering around waiting on another dog to open. From what you said, that dog is not making an "attempt" to hunt. In my opinion a dog you have to walk across a track is not making an attempt to hunt. You are doing the work of taking the dog across the track so it can finish the track. The dog never made an effort to find the track.

Websters answer to the defenition of attempt:
to make an effort to do, accomplish, solve, or effect
Example:
<attempted to swim the swollen river>

Hope this helps, but it really is up to the judge to make that call when he feels satisfied that the dog has met what he feels is making an attempt. Most of us know if the dog is making a good effort to go hunting.

In UKC all they have to do is leave the judges sight and the 15 breaks. That is how it was explained to me.

Yeah, I think the other KC has it right, gone for 5 to break the 15 but UKC likes to keep it simple.

I see absolutly no need for this rule. If a dog dont hunt it cant win, so the handler has donated some cash to the club for a walk in the woods, no harm done. I would be happy to draw 3 of these dogs at every hunt.

Allen and Todd have posted on this before or wrote about it in the advisor. If you can still see the dog even if its behind a bush it's not hunting so therefore time is still running if you call time out it does not save the dog. when time is back in the 15 is still running.

what about if the dog walks into a tree with you and it is handled, then you walk off the tree and turn lose, does it's 15 broke?

I WOULD SAY IF THE DOG WAS HANDLED BEFORE THE 15. THE TIME WOULD STOP. AM I RIGHT

many handlers should be scratched for "failure to hunt".

i would say it is paused just like it would be on a timeout, but not broke. So when they were recast the 15 would continue instead of restart,

To me it should be obviuos if the dog is hunting or not. My old dog would hunt out an area 15 -20 minutes and then check back in. I never held up a cast looking for her or wondering where she got to if she was not beside me or under a coon/tree...Now my young dog will flat out throw rocks in your face when you cut her loose and if she does not tree with in hearing good luck with finding her or wondering where she is. At the end of a 2 hour hunt guess what dog treed more coon ? Now if i could just get a happy medium between the 2.....I also ask why the "None Hunting dog" is such a big deal to those that are packing a coondog. I've scene plenty of dogs score 600+ if they stick there nose to the ground and can tree there own coon and hold a little pressure around here. But some would rather me keep time on my "Non Hunting" dog instead of keeping track on there fast game running /Babbling fool that can't tree his own coon in 2 hours.....

The other kennel clubs rule on this is much easier to police.

I scratched a dog last night for not going hunting that I wouldn't have been able to scratch in a UKC hunt because the dog would go out about 50 yards and then come straight back. It would have broke the 15 minute rule 100 times in UKC but because it had to stay gone for 5 consecutive minutes the 15 continued to run and eventually caught it.
