-- What happened to my female? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=365588)
What happened to my female?
I have a 1 yr. old female that was doing a bang up job in the woods last month. Then she came into heat and I laid her up for 4 weeks. Started taking her back out again last week and she acts like she has no clue what to do. She was strikeing tracks ahead of the old dogs and treeing with them, now she just kinda runs around and doesn't pay them no mind when they hit a track and tree.
It has gotten very hot since she was first running and treeing and the tracks are very hard for the old dogs to run now, but they do find some and they do tree them, she just seems to stand on her head whistling Dixie! She hasn't had a caged coon shown to her ever or had a coon shot down to her. I'm wondering if I should do either of these or both to get her coon minded again.
Does being in heat (her first) have anything to do with the way she is acting? Also I have been running her with a few young dogs that only want to play, should I only carry her with the old dogs for awhile and get the playing notion out of her head? I have gave her a few shoves to go hunting when she wants to play round our feet and she leaves and goes hunting, but I'm at a loss as to why she was doing so good a month ago and now she has brain fade.

I sure hope so. She was doing so good before she came into heat and now she don't look like 2 cents. I could just bawl.

Well I kinda firgured that the heat cycle messed her up, but I thought by now she would start coming around again. It has been a little over a month since she came in, so let's hope that in the next month or so, she will get her head outta her a$$ and start doing what she was doing before. On Monday evening I ran her with two 1yr. old males and all they did was run after her and try to mount her. She is NOT in heat at all anymore, but they still bothered around with her. Males are just as bad if not worse they a female hormone wise! And that goes for ALL male things!!!

I did move her from the kennel to the box about 2 weeks ago. I'll try the bath and the good ole Vicks treatment before turning her loose again. My male has no interest in her, just those 2 young dogs did. Fact no other male has bothered with her at all except those 2. Guess it is teenage hormones on overload or something.

I had the same thing happen with my female. Had her doing a fine job running treeing and handling, she came in heat her first time and it was like you emptied out her brain run it through a blender and dumped it back in. You could hardly handle her and would do nothing in the woods. So I layed her up for a month still the same thing another month nothing after 4 months I quit waiting. Hope you have a whole lot more luck then I did or have a lot more patience then I had.

We took her out tonight with her dad and mom. She did a great job of going out hunting and even struck a track (not sure what). She ran on in and opened up on track and treed a bit with the other 2 dogs. Little more happy with her this evening, then I was on Monday night. She is at least hunting and opening back up again.
Now if I can only figure out how to stop her from rolling in dead things and crap.............

One of mine Took 3 months to strighten back out !! One of the Most Agravating times I ever went thru !!
But I still Took her out every time we went hunting .. We would tree a coon and Maybe She would show Up and Maybe not, Sometimes She would just come by and Smell the Tree the other were on Then Just up and Leave !! Felt Like Killing Her !!!
Then one Night She Came Back to her old Self only much Better !!!

Ms. Lori, I've noticed that most every time my females are about to come in/out of heat they get crazy in the woods. First time I started to wonder about this my blue female (who I'd never seen fool with off game until then) made a tree that had a possum in it...coon COULD have been there, but of course that's beside the point. My NTCH female goes to you know where in a handbasket during that time. Not too long after I bought her last year she started leaving trees left and right, or just plain not hunting. I sure was disappointed, but sure enough she came in heat soon after that. She still wasn't totally back to normal until several weeks after she came out, and the same happened this spring. Hopefully your girl will be back on track soon!

Well now I feel better knowing she isn't the only female to lose her brains after going out of heat! She pested her dad last night to the point that he warned her 2 times he was not happy with her. Autumn just takes it and Zam will bark at a pup that is messing around with him when he is hunting. She got the message and left him alone. Pups!
