Help

Well, I had hopes that someone would turn up and literally give me a hand, but sometimes things don't always go as planned.

I have a dog I got from a rescue he's not pure bread by a long shot, but he seems to enjoy running track. I myself can't get him to run anything specific. This is my first attempt at this kind of thing. What I have learned has made me want to do it even more.

I am hoping in the future that I will have the money to get a dog with a bit more promise, but I got him as a companion and he's gotten me this far already. If anyone is willing to give me a few tips (or as many as you can get into writing) I would appreciate it. I've still got my ear to the ground for someone in the general area (that being Kansas - really anywhere in KS) but like I said before not everything goes as easy as it could, and besides that's part of the fun!

I have gone out on a few nights just to see what would happen. I've read on several forums that you can see where a dog is at by letting him track in the snow. I'm not sure how much of that is true, but I did find that he followed a mixture of everything. (Skunk, raccoon, deer, etc.) I just need some help narrowing his nose down a little. He might not give me much as far as bragging rights, but it would be fun.

After all, from what I can tell it's all about a guy out in the woods enjoying his hound(s).

Any help you could give.. Thanks,
KJ

best advise you can get, is if you want a dog to hunt coon with, get one that is bred for it...having to 'MAKE' a coondog is very difficult, its much easier to get a good cooner when they have the genetics bred into them...your best bet is get a little money put back, find a local hunter and buy a young started dog...try blueticker on this board, he is from south east kansas, I am hearing some good things about his hounds, and he hunts a lot...

Thanks, I figured that'd be the consensus. I'm a little stubborn but not stupid. And thanks again for the name, I'll try to get in touch with him real soon!

there are a lot of hunters in Kansas...

I figured there would be, but I am not sure how to look them up. Or how to meet them. I don't know to many hunters myself other than duck and deer hunters.

How would I go about getting to know them?

That was a great help WOW!!!!

I don't think I've ever spent this much time staring at a laptop, but man did that pay off...

Thanks again.

P.S. I live on the West side of Wichita don't know if you'd know anyone close by.

I used to know a couple in the area, but not anymore...you should meet lots of people at that hunt...I was there last year, probably be 60 or more hunters there this year...

Posted by K.J. on 02-23-2010 01:35 AM:

That's great...

I knew there had to be something, but I didn't know anyone, and there's not a place in wichita to just show up and introduce yourself. But there is one 2 hours away and that'll be worth it.

Like I said thanks, you going to be there this year?

Posted by on 02-23-2010 01:38 AM:

no problem, yes, I am gonna be there for an afternoon picking up a dog, but no I am not hunting up there...there is a real nice guy named John Carroll, he lives maybe half an hour north east of salina (best I can remember), he runs blue dogs and is good to hunt with...

Posted by on 02-23-2010 01:41 AM:

John Carroll said to give him a call, he isnt huntin much right now but he could probably help you find people in your area to hunt with...785-493-1309...

Well, the dam is broken more or less. Now I got a place to go and see. I'm already requesting the time off of work. Boss is going to love that!

I hope to see you out there, and I plan on meeting and getting to know as many people as I can. I'm already getting excited... That's going to make February a lot longer. Good thing it almost over!

Posted by on 02-23-2010 01:46 AM:

glad I could be of help, hope you find some good folks to hunt with...I bet one of them could hook you up with a good bred hound pup cheap, lol...

Posted by K.J. on 02-23-2010 01:51 AM:

Yep, as long as the truck(s) don't break (always got a plan B) I'll have the money in a couple of months.

I gave him a call... He has somebody in mind and is going to get back to me in a few days!
