Garmin Problems????

Well i bought my system in jan of this year, with 2 collars, so far both collars have had to be sent back in and the receiver!! i know of a few with the same deal just wondering how many others have had the same!! If they wont last any longer then this its not gonna be to cheap to keep the gps up and working next year!!They must not of tested them for the average coon hunter, but for the weekend warriors instead!! lol the service is great but the product well aint been to dependable!

I've had mine for almost a year now without any problems. It has been used a lot & so far trouble free. I don't think I'm a weekend warrior either. Turned loose last night while it was raining, thundering and lighting, couldn't hear the dog for all the noise but the garmin let me know where he was, what he was doing and when he got treed.

I had one problem a couple months ago when a button on the handheld quit working but Garmin replaced the whole unit for free even though my warranty had run out. That's great service if you ask me.

If given the choice I would take a Garmin with an occasional problem over a beep beep that would work perfect for 100 years with no problem.

um i would rather have a beep beep that worked perfect for 100 years than sitting at home waiting on great customer service to send me a new whatever cause it was broke,"occasionaly"

I tried one of the Garmens here for awhile...........nice when it worked, kinda neat to see what side of the river the dogs were on before I got there........

Way too many times the receiver couldnt find the collar to suite me. I wasnt about to take a risk of losing a dog at the fault of some cute gadget.

Worked good in the winter when the leaves were off, but in big water oak timbered river bottems in the summertime, 99% of what I hunt, it was just plain useless. Dogs within 100yards of us and no signel.

I said thanks, but no thanks, and went back to my Quick Track 6000. Might not be able to see what side the river the dogs are on, but I have yet to not be able to find them at anytime.

I have yet to have any of the signal problems that you and others on this board have mentioned. I hunt in mountains in some of the thickest places around and I never lose signal with the handheld until the dogs get at least 900 - 1000 yards and even then I can hook up the long range antenna hanging on my side and track them on out to 3 or 4 miles.

As far as summer leaves or winter with no leaves I have absolutely no difference what so ever in the distance mine will track.

I've never had problems with mine in the river bottoms and I also hunt in some big timber. I have one of the folding antennas on mine & when they get out of distance I just extend it out. As far as summer foliage I can't tell any difference.

I think the worse I saw one operate was in those same bottems one night hunting with one of Dickersons handlers and dogs...Ruby or something like that. She was working along the edge of the bean field we were standing in.......Garmen said 157feet away. As soon as she entered the wateroak timber...no signel. Couldnt have gone 50 feet. Never had signel agian. They treed in another hundred yards or so, we could accualy see them standing on the tree with our lights, and the garmen coudnt find her.

I made the comment he would be sol if she had got hung in a fence or in a hole in there. We hunted that timber all night, and he never had signel unless the dogs were in the thinner/smaller timber or out in the open fields.

To be fair though, Ive never had any garmen device work in that timber. Dog tracking, personal gps, none.

Garmin

How many of you guys complaining read the owner's manual and update your unit via the Garmin Website?

If you know how to correctly operate the Astro and keep it updated. It is a nice system.

Posted by cowboyjones on 10-04-2009 08:59 PM:

i dont have a problem using it, lol when the collars wont stay on and the receiver wont turn on you can read till your blue in the face and it wont help a thing, if your directing it towards me i use it 4 and 5 nights a week , iv got it down pat lol and the updating does help !! i only lose signal around 900 yds with out the roof mount hooked up, but with the roof mount i can get around 3 miles out of it,, i would have a hard time using anything else again , after using the garmin thats for sure !!
