The new points program UKC is starting up next year should give plenty of incentive to hunt the grands. Right now they can hunt the MiniSlams and Super Slams if they want to hunt for something other than a trophy. I wonder how many who vote "yes" in this poll actually own a grand night?

Posted by Incognito on 08-20-2003 08:34 PM:

I own a GR NT, and I would recommend hunting PKC hunts after you finish your dog to GR NT. That way you are hunting for more that just a trophy. Go ahead step up to the next level of coonhunting, but remember when you start hunting PKC hunts and your dog needs minused it will get minused. I hunt both hunts, I hunted a UKC hunt the other night and I am getting so sick of UKC hunters not wanting to take their minuses. When a dog walks out of the woods and strolls around your feet with its head in the air, IT IS OFF THE TRACK and gets MINUSED. When a dog comes off the tree and meets you 20yards off the tree with its nose on the ground walking around IT IS OFF THE TREE AND YOU WILL GET MINUSED. I don't care if you told me before the hunt that your dog will meet you at the tree or not. If a dog barks off the tree and it is your dog admit it and tell the judge that is my dog minus him. Let's all say this together now, JUDGE THAT IS MY DOG MINUS HIM. one more time JUDGE THAT IS MY DOG MINUS him.

I OWN 1 GRNTCH AND A NTCH WITH 2 WINS AND ALSO HUNT PKC. I'VE BEEN TO A FEW OF BOTH HUNTS OVER THE YEARS AND IF THERE IS 1 MINUS THAT PKC HUNTERS TAKE MORE WILLINGLY IT IS A SLICK TREE MINUS. IN UKC YOU MUST HAVE PLUS POINTS TO WIN AND GUYS WILL FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL TO KEEP THEM ON THE CARD. SOME OF THE BIG SCORES YOU SEE WOULDN'T BE AS BIG WITH THE MINUS OFF. IF THE NEW REWARDS PROGRAM WORKS OUT THAT SHOULD PUT MORE GRNTCH'S IN THE WOODS AT THE LOCAL LEVEL. I VOTE NO TO MORE DEGREES BUT IF THEY ARE OUT THERE MOST WILL TRY TO PUT THEM ON THEIR DOGS SO IT MIGHT MAKE FOR ENTRIES.

Posted by Incognito on 08-20-2003 11:48 PM:

Dave you are so right, I can't believe I didn't think about all the slick trees in UKC hunts that don't get minused. In a UKC hunt coons cross out of every tree that you don't find one in. When you walk up to the tree UKC hunters start trying to show you where the coon crossed out before they start looking for the coon. A month ago I was in a UKC hunt, 2 dogs treed in a bush with vines on top that almost touched other bushes, after about a minute of looking I said I am satisfied that it is minused, one of the handlers said OH Man, a coon could cross out and be a half mile in any direction in this mess. I got out voted 2 to 1 and circled a bush.

pkc

i guess pkc is another way to go but my experience is that there is as much cheating in pkc as there is in ukc as far as pkc inorder to make it worth your while you would have to enter the 75 hunts or with a large added purse these 15 and 25 $ hunt 90% of the time your are losing money you pay 25$ then you have your gas money food and drink money well you win your cast and your split is 45 or 50$ how much did you win not much
i have hunted alot of pkc actually i started hunting when it was pca only way is see is to hunt the bigger hunts when it comes to minus as long as one guy is getting the least amount of minus he's happy because YOU MUST HAVE A WINNER NO MATTER WETHER YOU TREE A COON OR NOT i never have seen the logic in that i could breed or buy a slick treeing machine and in the summer i could blow people out i knew of a dog like that he could score 900 circle in a subdivision full of houses he was hard to beat if you didnt see a coon i mean you knew the dog was lying but its leafy so its circle i think you need to see the coon in order to get a cast win just my opinion i have had some gr nites who i only hunted ina few larger hunts or a rqe i enjoy going to the hunts and the fellowship and if i was out of dogs to hunt in the nite hunts i wish i could take a gr nite and hunt

SEEN IT HAPPEN SAT. NIGHT. MY DOG TREED ON 2 TREES THE OTHER 3 DOGS TREED ON 6. THE LAST 1 WAS A WILD CHERRY SITTING ON THE EDGE OF A 8 FOOT BANK. VERY SMALL TREE IN PLAIN SITE. I WANTED IT MINUSED BUT THEY SAID WE HADN'T MINUSED ONE JUST LIKE IT EARLIER. 2 WANT TO MINUS 2 WANT TO CIRCLE THE JUDGE CIRCLES AND GETS THE WIN. HE SAYS HE LIKES TO GIVE A DOG THE BENIFIT OF THE DOUBT. I LIKE TO GIVE MINE THE BOOT IN THE TAIL WHEN HE TREES A TREE LIKE THAT. LET ME DRAW ONE OF THOSE WOOD MONSTERS AND MOST NIGHTS I FEEL I CAN WIN. IT JUST TAKES 1 COON TO BEAT 6 OR 7 CIRCLES. IN ALL REALITY MOST CIRCLE TREES WITH NO HOLE THE COON IS NOT THERE IN MY AREA.

minuse my dog

incognito, tell me if there was a added purse for 1500.00 dollars and you knew you would win the big prize moneyif you just kept your mouth shut you would still tell the judge to minuse your dog.all i can say you are one honest person,we need you judging the hunts in u k c ....................... c r moss

I've seen handlers minus their on dog with alot more than 1500 dollars on the line. It don't have nothing to do with money, either your dog is right or it's wrong.

Posted by on 08-21-2003 06:52 PM:

I've hunted in both and when I finish my dog in ukc I will take it to a pkc hunt.I would like to see a new title in ukc.PKC made a new title for the dogs that win 20,000.I agree that you do have handlers that take ther minus a little better but your fooling your self if you think that most of them do.I am a PKC hunt director and I have seen plenty of questions about people not takeing ther minus.I dont enjoy the PKC hunts as much any more the people dont seem as freindly.I went to one the other night that only 4 of us showed up and the other handlers were mad at me because I wanted to hunt and not flip a quarter to see who won.Its not very inpressive when at the breeders showcase 1/3 of the cast were won on the first night without plus points. The next 2 nights 1/2 of the cast were finshed with out plus points, but they still won money to go toward ther state races.

No Barney that was all cast not just the pup derby.

what i am saying is that when you average them all in, the pups bring the others down generally.

Dave and Incognito,
It seems like there must be more of a difference of hunters in different parts of the country than in the two registeries. I don't doubt that the guys in your part of the country do the right thing and take there minus, but around here all of the PKC hunts I go to you hardly ever see minus points everyone just looks the tree kinda quick and if there isn't a coon then its just circle it and lets go. I'm speaking from what I've seen, and most of the clubs in this area hold UKC hunts in the winter and PKC hunts in the summer, and the reason is for this is no secret with the leaves on the trees its just easier to circle. Don't take this the wrong way I'm just stating what I've seen myself and its not meant as a slam on PKC.

PKC in NC

All I know is that it only took me about 3 or 4 hunts to learn that I was not a PKC hunter. Now it is evident that a lot more folks feel the same way in my part of the state. Clubs that have been having PKC hunts the last several years are tired of putting on a hunt and only getting 4 to 8 dogs show up. Reason being is that all the folks around here that hunt PKC seem to think they are gonna get rich hunting for money: or so it seems. In the 3 or 4 PKC hunts I've been in I noticed that the morals of the cast members seemed to be a lot lower than that of those who locally hunt UKC. I guess it's just that way in my area. This is not a slam on PKC please don't take it that way. Just my observation and opinion.

Posted by Ryan Layton on 08-23-2003 04:30 PM:

You NC boys are right. It has a lot more to do with who you are hunting with then what registry you are hunting. Both registries have rules. Some people are gonna follow the rules, and some people aren't. In this area I'd say the guys who hunt PKC are gonna try harder to get away with stuff. However, sometimes those same guys come to a UKC hunt, and they are just as hard to get along with when they are hunting for a trophy as they are when they are hunting for cash. Win at any cost right? I guess that is the way some folks see it.

I own a dual grand and I know that when I finished him I was very happy and was ready to move on and get a new dog to try to fill his shoes. After awhile it is nice to handle another dog and face a new challenge. I think there is a level or prestige that goes with a grand nt. ch. degree and if you made another degree on top of that it would make the gr.nt. degree not as prestigous. Just my point of view.

In my opinion

I feel if there is another title out there, the gr nts will just be discredited as far as what they have accomplished already. They have already proven they are coon dogs...... let's just leave it at that.

On a positive note............ it would improve attendance at the hunts.
