Don't need a gig
Get a long fishing cane and tie about two foot of fishing line with a hook tied on, baited with a peice of red colored cloth. shine your frog dangle the hook in front of the frog, bam he's your frog. good luck

Frawg giggin must be the national sport here in yadkin co. We gig ponds more than the river. You can sometimes rack up on them by slipping in on golf course ponds. Best done on a buddy system with one man shining and another gigging. I prefer a small fish gig to a frog gig because they don't bend as easy as a frog gig. Just keep it filed sharp so you can stick one sitting on top of grass or lilly pads where you can't pin him to the bottom. Like to use a long handle for the hard to reach places.
Try it, it's fun and some mighty fine eating.
MmmMmmMmm got my light, got my gig, can get my 12 pack(coke only), got the happy youngster ready to go. All i need now is the frogs. Actually any info on how everyone approaches a pond and how they go about actually shining and sneaking up on the frogs is appreciated. Just don't want to take the boy and girlfriend out when its steaming hot here at midnight and have a cluster---k. I am a complete novice at this and don't really want to go at it blindfolded. Thanks t
frog giggin is alot of fun and man are they good eatin. We start around here about the last week of school around march 26. somtimes you have to go early before sombody else cleans them out.we dont do much gigin after the 4th of july because the frogs move on up the bank in the tall grass, but you can still get a few. You can pick up a cheap gig at walmart. keep it sharp. we go in ponds mostly but go to the creeks early. Be quiet and find the eyes when you see one sneak up to it . when you get preety close shine your light on it and it will freeze get your gig within a inch or two and gigg it ,and then its really just hit and miss until you get good.
A easy way to clean the back legs is to start by holding the frogs by both feet in one hand with a fist. with the other hand put your knife on the inside of one thigh push away and cut the skin and snap the joint. now the frog should only have one leg. Grab that leg and bend it towards his head holding onto his front leg cut the back leg of in the same manner away from you. Now you can just pull the skin inside out down the leg to the foot. bend his foot around and cut the foot with the now hanging skin off like you did the legs away from you. i can clean a large frog in about 2 min or so and do it safely.
You will see some white and yellow looking tendons pull these out. they should come right out if you cut the feet off. this will keep them from jumping out of your skillet. soak them in salt water over night.
i hope this helps and good luck

Travis, we have been doing a little gigging lately with some success. We wade into the pond and just move slowly so you dont make much noise. (about 2 feet deep). When you gig them dont think there dead!!!! lol, hold them tight to the ground and run your hand down the gig and hole the frog by the legs and THEN pull it off the gig!!! LOL
Good luck
We have bullfrogs in our pond that are as big as salad plates. They startle me every time I walk by and they jump in the water, because they make a loud squeak as they're jumpin. It sounds like you've stepped on a squeaky dog toy.

Travis, take Brownie and he will show how to do it. your buddy Keith from Mcalaster came up and we had a bad hunt. His little female crossed the Flooded Arkansas not once but twice. Dogs could hardly smell and run a track. Should have went gigging.
If you're in a safe place to do so use a .22 thats what we use. we only gig if we have to. takes alot paitence to gig but still fun. what ever you take to put them in be sure it has a lid they come back to life.

ya ive been giggin quit a few times lately but it just seem like they are harder to get this year cuz of all the rain that weve been havin. all the weeds are closer to the bank and its harder to see them. i just dont think its a very good year for them.

here's some pics from friday night took about 3 hrs to get 1/2 a 5 gal bucket full

Me and a friend have had some good luck this year! The first night we went on some flooded gov. land we gigged 67, and the second night we gigged 38. I think we started thinning them out so we haven't been back. The best part of it, we were gigging them off horses (2 year old colts), so we never got wet and didn't have to worry about snakes. I will post some pics later.

I have tried it every way there is but the best way to get the most is to take a 22 with bird shot you can buy them at wal. mart they wount move just lay right there go pick them up put in a bag cut legs off when you are done hunting .thanks
Jamie Williams, looks like,
you have giged frogs for awhile? How you explained it, is how I have done it for years, with the exception that when you get a big frog I will clean the front legs & back also. And like you, make sure to take the tendons out of all of the legs. I have found that it is easiest to get the tendons out after cutting the feet off, then going inside of the body cavity, next to the backbone, & slip your knife blade under the tendon next to the backbone, holding the tendon down tight against your knife blade with your thumb & pull slow. Sometimes those back legs will get to working back & forth while your pulling those tendons out.
I like to batter them like chicken, & deep fry them, they get more evenly done.
The most that I have ever caught in one night, was 117, & I was supposed to be at school at 7:30 the next morning, & at 6:30 I wasn't quite done cleaning them, yet.
Sometimes there is little white worms that get between the skin & muscle, & it seems as if they get worse the hotter & later in the year that it gets.
