Does it get better range?

Posted by on 04-24-2008 05:23 AM:

The range is no better but the collar unit rides under the neck like a regular collar and that makes them worth it.

Posted by GA DAWG on 04-24-2008 05:51 AM:

Is the range atleast as good ?

Posted by on 04-24-2008 01:16 PM:

My experience has been that they are the same for range.

One other thing. Under hunting conditions, I haven't seen one maintain contact beyond .8 mile. If someone is actually getting more than a mile range, under hunting conditions, I'd like to know how they are doing it. With ANY antenna.

I'm with you JIM !!!!!! People claim to but the best I do is around .9..... I got 1.5 one night in the big hills.Dont know how in the crap it did it.Had something to do with the big hollar they were in.Even in southern ga I cant get over a mile!!! I've done everything.Recalibrated every time.Rereconized the collar.Still its the same..I called Bruce monday and ordered a truck mount ant.See if that helps any.Still I've not had to use my other tracker since getting the astro!

I can get over a mile with the truck mount antenna but like the rest of you I am about .8 without it. I still love it though, my dogs hunt fairly close and I have only lost signal once and that was when they crossed over a ridge and treed on the back side. I hunt in the mountains, I figured some of you guys in the flatland would get more range than .8.

My range doesnt seem to be affected at all by whether or not the collar is on the top or bottom of the dogs neck, I hear some people say it is. What is your experience with the collar turning upside down, good or bad?

It seems every unit is different, I have no idea why.

Mine is out of the box,

Last night I got 1.6 miles in hills before I totaly lost signal, drove around and picked up the signal again while I was in the tuck.

The only other time I recall loosing signal was at 1.8 miles, the dog was treed right where it lost signal.

Depending on terrain, I often loose signal at less than 200yds. but so far it has picked it back up.

I like this thing more all the time...

I like mine, even with it's limitations...

What I've not yet figured out is how we can put a remote control car on the planet Mars, drive it from Houston Texas, and I can't even seem to keep a cell phone signal....

Amazing!

do you guys just run the astro collar or do most run another tracker also at the same time? I have been just useing the astro with the roof mount antenna and havn't lost my dog yet. Lose signal some but I just drive closer.

I'm also using a marshall with mine..Probably would not have to but one of these nights.Aint gonna be a closer way in to them and I might need my other tracker!

Where can you get this new antenna?I called garmin and they have no info on this.Would really appreciate any info on this.Like most everyone else really like this unit except for antenna problems.

Look under the vender classifieds on this board.Bruce Conkey sells one here along with a few others.

Posted by on 04-24-2008 08:05 PM:

The cable I use came from Bruce Conkey. $25.00
I have quit running the tracking collar since I started useing the cable antenna. But if I traveled out of the area to say, southern Indiana, I'd for sure use both the Astro anbd the regular tracking collar.

JiM if I sold it to you for $25 then I am a better salesman than I thought. I only get $20 for them, I owe you a rebate. Seriously I appreciate what you have done for me.

20-25......It's all just chicken feed to us rich coonhunters.

Lookout now Jim...That 5 dollars could buy you a gallon of gas!
