Great Hunt w Good Friends

Yesterday a few of my "older" huntin' buddies called to see if I would be interested in turning a few hounds loose last night. The weather threatened to be a little on the undesirable side but what the heck. Alger Morgan made the trip all the way from Tennessee with a young dog and who can say no to my good old friend Herb? The wind was still blowing pretty good when we left the house but within an hour or so it died down and it turned out to be a great night for hunting. We made 9 trees and brought home 8 pelts by midnight. I really enjoyed the time in the woods with these two fine gentlemen. Thank you Alger and Herb, I enjoyed it.

(left to right) Herb Vaughn with Candy, Alger Morgan with Max and myself with 'Ole Tex. Even though most of these coons were treed without much for tracks, the dogs got the job done last night. Hope you hunters are all having a good time with your hounds in the woods this fall as well.

Here are a few photos of our hunt with the SC boys last week. Some of you probably know Travis Windham. Travis is a former President of the Southeastern Treeing Walker Association. Also his son Travis and friend Travis Brown. TBrown is a member of the Black Creek Coon Club in Darlington. That's right - it's not hard to remember everyone's name in this group. Just yell "Travis" and they all look. lol! We had a couple good nights of hunting. Friday was probably the best hunt when we made six turnouts, made six trees and looked at six coons. My brother Paul also came up from Indiana to hunt with us.

This is Travis Brown with the first and biggest coon we treed on Friday night. 22 lbs on the scales. Mr. Brown is a member of the Black Creek Coon Club in Darlington, SC.

Travis Windham with his little gyp he calls Visa after her and Mello Yellow treed the first coon Friday night. Visa is a nice little tree dog and plenty loud I might add.

Visa and Mello Yellow. MY is a female my brother is hunting for a fella by the name of Roger Hanning of PA. These two were paired up most of the night and did a pretty good job trailing up and treeing their share of coon.

In the middle is my brother Paul trying to show T Brown and Travis the coon.

(from left to right) Travis Windham Jr. with Visa, Travis Windham with Nymp, ( nice little dog with a lot of go) Travis Brown with my brothers Mello Yellow dog. On the far right is Tex and some fella that hung out all night and wouldn't leave us alone. We made him carry all the coon.

B & T Man,

We did have a good time. There aren't any finer men in the world to hunt with then Mr. Vaughn and Mr. Morgan.

Hobo, we didn't weigh any of them last night. I would guess the biggest one was between 20 and 21 lbs. Sometimes they don't actually weigh as much when you put them on a scale ya know. lol!

Nice pics. They just dont get any better than Herb.
About 30 years ago we were hunting and he told me,"Son,if you ever get a good red dog,you sure will like him" lol

Speaking of red dogs,Ole Tex is getting a bit white faced. The Brotherhood of redbone enthusiests should string you up for not pushing him in the big hunts in his prime. He was/is a good one.

What you need is a lil ole spotted pup to learn the ropes from Tex before he retires. Just say the word and I will bring you one. I cant garantee it will be anywhere near the calibur Ole Tex is,but I can garantee that, "if you ever get a good spotted dog,you sure will like him."

Tex sure is getting more white!! how old is he getting now?? Great to see that he is still getting it done though. Whos the max dog that Mr. Morgan has?? He is a great guy with some great hounds but i do not recall max. Candy sure does look good though!! Have heard alot about her!!! Good luck with the rest of the season allen. Should be great.

Man Allen I can't believe that you actually have time to go hunting. I guess it feels good to finally have a break. Now come on down here to Central Florida and hang out in the swamps with us a few nights. We promise to behave.

Glad you guys enjoyed the pics. We've been having a lot of fun this fall. Kinda making up for the time when I couldn't hunt as much because of work som it sure feels good to get out there a lot more. So far we've had some great weather for hunting. Living in the State of Michigan, that could change quickly though.

B&T Man - I currently keep three Red Hounds. The old dog who is ten and a half now, another who is two and a 10 month old. Also, two beagles.

Warn and Hobo - Careful now! Hobo, have you forgotten what happened about a year ago? lol!

elvis - I think Herb is around 70 years old now isn't he? He doesn't hear very well anymore but still loves to get out and hunt. I can just hear him say that too! I may be in the market for some new blood soon. Been a little dissapointed in my two year old so far. Just not quite cutting the mustard. Really don't care what color it is if it can get the job done. Just always had a soft spot for reds I guess. The first dog I ever owned was a Redbone that turned out to be pretty good hound. I was 12 years old and my brother and I always wanted a coonhound to hunt with. Grandpa always had hounds and we were just fascinated with them. Anyway, we had saved up some money and we found a litter of Redbone pups advertised in the Oscoda County News. We called the owner and he still had some left so went down to Rose City, which was just south of our hometown of Mio, and picked out a little female. I don't know how we got so lucky but all summer we laid drags for this pup and she would trail it and tree wherever we would mark a tree with the scent. We never hunted this pup, Jody we named her, in the wild until the very first night of season. I remember it like it was last night. Grandma and Grandpa both happened to be their visiting for a few days so dad, my brother and grandpa and I took Jody out after it got dark and turned her loose in the cornfield across the road from the farm. She took off and it wasn't long she has struck her first wild coon track. She trailed that coon up towards the hardwoods but before she got their she let out a good locate and started treeing. Wow! My blood was pumping. My brother and I were overly excited and wasted no time getting to her. She had treed on the the lone apple tree about a hundred yards from the timber. Sure enough she had the coon! I'll never forget that night. She turned out to be a pretty fair hound and have always had a soft spot for red dogs ever since. Although I have since learned that not all pups will work out like Jody did, I never give up on finding that next prospect. Tex is now going on eleven and I do need a replacement. I've been trying to come up with something the last several years but nothing but dissappointments so far for the most part. I would like to come up with another good one for sure. Maybe I need to think about looking outside the box. lol! You and Herb are right though "if you find a good one you'll like it".

redbone 22 - Max is a young dog out of the Cyrus dog that Roger Shabel owns right now.

Clay - It would be nice to be able to come down there sometime and hunt with 'yall. Do you have anything other than swamps to hunt? lol! Northern Indiana and Michigan kinda spoils a fella ya know.
