need a little help w/this one

we recently got a dog and she had never been tried on coons. We trapped a coon and showed her it in the cage and she wanted nothing to do w/it. So we said ok, we'll try her in the woods w/it. we let the coon out of the cage and let it tree and she still didn't want anything to do w/it. Our other 2 dogs went nuts but she tucked her tail under her legs and ran. have any ideas on how to help?

Age?

just keep working on it. the bad part of this sport is that some dogs just dont have what it takes. how old is this dog? something that may help is to try a coon hide insted of the real thing. sometimes they are a little scared. just got to get them used to the smell then work your way up.

Don't get caught up in trying to make the dog work. Chances are it will never have enough nerve to make a coon dog. Let it run loose on a farm with other hounds treeing game. Hunt it on squirels and see if it's scared. Let her eat a few remains of squirels and shoot out a few. Then see if the dog has interest in coon. However, my first recommendation is to get rid of the dog and start with something that isn't scared.

my op on this is with all the mess Vick is in, don't jump on the board and say 22. if some one does do that they better keep it with them and not spread it. just getting a new dog and on one incident does not mean the dog won't make it. i have showed young dogs a coon and the first time some were afraid the first time. follow some of the other advice given above like show them a hide.

some are late starters

some are real skittish for a couple of weeks after moving to a new home and adjusting to new routines.
I would try letting her run with a gentle older dog--something that you would be willing to call a pup trainer. That can be reassuring to dogs that lack confidence.
Also take her for walks in the woods in the daytime. It may be too much too new to her all at once, especially if she's never been off the chain much before.
Give her a chance to build up her confidence before showing her a hissing spitting coon again : ).

thanks everyone! it's nice to know that more people opt to keep trying the dog then "taking care of it" if you know what i mean. The people that we got her from ran her on cats and made a kill over her at 6 mos. He got rid of her b/c he was thinning out his cat pack. I guess she has some good blood in here, she's part hammer bread. And eventhough if she doesn't work out i think i'll just give her away to some nice people, she's great w/kids, and maybe she'll be a house dog or something. Let me know if you have any more tips or ideas!!

starting young dogs

Had a 12 mo. old sackett male. also had a little coon on a leash, might have been 3lb. but mean as a hedge hog. i got my pup out and tied him up and then got my little coon and lead it up to him the dog just laid down and started shaking while the little coon went off on him. my first thought was to kill him but i throwed him back in the kennel. 2 weeks later i had a coon in a trap took dog and coon back in pasture tied dog to truck let the coon go were he could see it run off and go in to the woods. he started barking i turned him loose he struck the coon went in to woods and just died on a tree ishot it out to him. and in about 2 mo. later i sold him for some good money he went on to make a Gr.nite ch. so you never know when that little lite isgoing to come on . thought you might like this.

GIVE IT A CHANCE. MY BEST DOG WOULDNT LOOK AT A COON IN TRAP OR TURN LOOSE EVER SHE SHYED AWAY. IT DOSNT MATTER ABOUT TRAP IT MATERS ABOUT TRACKS AND TREES WITH COON IN IT. MY THOUGHT.JUST HUNT HER IF IT IS IN HER SHE SHOW YOU!

Training dogs takes alot of patience. Some dogs are not interested in cage coons at first and take some time. Like said above she is in a new environment and everything is new. Now if the dog does not want to go hunting now that can be a problem!! But give the dog a fair opportunity to prove itsself and then make a evaluation. But let her get ued to you and all and see what happens.JMO.

Im pretty new to this to so its kinda like the blind leading the blind but...

I've trained 4 pups. 3 of them grew up to be able to tree thier own coon on a regular basis. 1 was nothing special. The other two were and are nice dogs. The two that made nice dogs and the dud were all scared of the coon the first couple of times. the one that wasn't scared was 6-7 months old when he saw a coon.
The ones that turned out nice were 5 months and 6 months. The dud saw one at about 9 months. I think a lot of them are scared at first but if you give em a while to forget about them and show them again I think one day some of them are gonna come out of there shell.

I've seen dogs go crazy over a caged coon and never make it.
I've also seen top coon dogs show little intrest or outright fear of a caged coon. Emily gave good advice and you may get to see the light go on in her head.

Thank you all for your insite! We took her out again last night and she atleast left our side a little! we hit a coon on the way home and she even smelled it!! lol big improvement from yesterday! we took the coon home w/us and gonna play w/ her today w/it!

try showing her the coon when she's in her kennel or on the chain bring the coon to her not her to the coon. see if that does anything. if not keep showing her the coon every day or even give her a hide to chew on for a while.
