Can dogs adapt ?
This season tracking has been tuff. My dogs can work bad tracks. It has got to where she is treeing at least one coon a night just coming treed and having it. Normally not a layup dog.
Tar
I've seen some dogs as they age just figure out how to tree layups. I think a few decide they like it better than trailing. Had a female years ago that all but quit running tracks. She somehow figured out to hunt across the wind. It didn't matter where you cut her or where you pointed her, she'd line up with a crosswind and cut through the country. They're smarter than we think sometimes...

I've also noticed that some get tighter with their mouths as they age. Some tighten up as they start to take tougher tracks. Watching the Garmin can show the difference between truely laying one up and trailing one up with their mouth shut.

My gyp I hunt is tight mouthed on track falls treed. I have to really be paying attention to her to know here moves. The more I hunt her the better Iam learning her. Had her about 4 month and really enjoy hunting her.

In the long game Youth and Vigor or Age and Experience come into play , that is why Old Timers had a saying Flash in the Pan etc. And the earliest starting pup does not always make the best 3 YO either. Tar you should know better than to ask a question like this all we are going to find out is how little we actually know. LOL

On cold evenings I like a warm fire, a bowl of fine tobacco, a little bourbon and my favorite tartoons. A man can do some deep thinking about hounds and such. JS
The neighbors borrowed some flour the other day. yesterday they brought us two dozen home baked cookies. Me and Mrs tar had cookies and milk after I got in from hunting.
Just the simple things !
