-- A New Coonhunters Website (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928399210)

A New Coonhunters Website

Guys I'm looking for some opinions.
I've been throwing around the idea of starting a new website with it mainly focused on competition hunting, training and breeding.

My plan would be to gather a team of top competitors, trainers and breeders and give them a platform to voice their opinions, advice and instruction. My main motivation for the website would be to help educate your average weekend warrior on the nuances of coon hunting everything from breeding, starting pups, finishing pups, competing, handling, equipment reviews, legal threats and news in our sport, all in a video format. It seems to me that much of this information is currently passed by word of mouth. By providing a platform for our communities leaders in the sport this information would be readily available for regular joe.

My dilemma is this, so far from research I don't believe this endeavor would be cheap. Due to the fact that this sport is what I would consider to be a niche hobby, I don't believe there would be enough traffic to attract advertisements. So with out having to pay out of pocket for the expenses of taking on such an endeavor. The only way it would work is to make it subscription based. Which basically means it would be set up where a viewer would subscribe most likely with like a 30 day free trial and then it would be 20 dollars a month or so after that. With that they would gain access to large video library, private forums, articles, podcasts, news etc etc. The videos would be from everything to the very basics of dog training to the nuances of breeding. Basically this would take the information that is being passed around by word of mouth at the highest levels of competition and breeding and allow them to be available straight from the guys having success in a video format.

I think there are many services such a website could offer everything from getting some top but not well known trainers a platform to present themselves and market themselves. Meanwhile allowing the average Hunter first getting a preview of the trainer through there instructional videos. The same could go for stud owners to breeders to equipment repairs etc. etc. Basically I see it as way for us all to grow as a sport, educate and learn from each other. I don't mind working on this project for free, but God knows my wife would divorce me if I drop 5 grand on video equipment and editing software with out first having a business plan in place and means to pay for it.

So I figured rather then just jumping into it head first I would post a thread here to get some opinions, which I know so many of you have.

Edit: If you guys do like the idea feel free to also make some suggestions on trainers breeders or people that you look up to in the sport, that you would enjoy hearing from.

Another thing I forgot to mention our goal would be that you would have several videos uploaded every week. So that information is always up to date, and there is always new content to view.

I don't know how i would feel about paying $20 a month for things i see on UKC except for the videos. i may be a little hesitant.

I like the idea.

My suggestion would be to start out small. Just make it a good message forum with articles to read without a lot of "static". You could probably do that without charging, to get followers and build up traffic to the site.

The videos are a great idea but as you found out, its expensive to get into that. Once you do, you can justify charging. Maybe you have a free part of the site and then a part with all the bells and whistles that it takes a subscription, to access? Also, keep in mind there are a lot of coonhunters out there still on Dial-up, and videos would be useless to them.

Go for it, and good luck!!

x2

I would like to see some GOOD training videos. Maybe you could make some DVD's to sell. I would pay for that but probably not pay for a web site. I like your way of thinking!!!

I dont know...I put a show training

dvd on the vendor board and its professionally done and I sold a few at first and then it just dropped off. Not sure why. Its not that expensive and done extremely well and I have made at least a dozen grand champions using this method.
Money is tight I guess.

Good luck. I like anything coonhunting.

There is a website for deer hunters called Iowa Whitetails.com that is set up just like what you are describing. It has some free parts but the good stuff you have to subscribe to. You could look at it for some ideas.

I googled some white tail hunting sites, they appeared to be some really nice ones and some not so clean. How ever if you look closely many of them have ads on the side website. These ads come from the site receiving so much traffic and that would be one direction to go, but then of course you have to deal with all the stupid ads.

The nicer ones without the ads seemed to be outfitters hence how they were funding the site.

The problem with me making them is that they wouldn't be any good! I would simply be supplying a way for top people in the sport to post there videos and market themselves for free. The reason I think this would be such a good thing is it would be the most appealing to our younger generations in the sport, helping spur growth and success for newer participants. The reason it would cost money, is because I would have to send video equipment all over the country and hire someone to edit the videos, build and maintain the site.

Just to clarify what I'm proposing is not a new idea, video subscriptions have been around since the internet took off.
There are companies and contractors out there that specialize in producing instructional videos, for corporations and small businesses. It would simply just be new to this sport, and being that most information is passed by word of mouth in this sport, which makes it difficult to access good information. This would be a way to bridge that gap.

cool idea, but to be honest I wouldnt pay $20 a month for it. I would suggest doing podcasts. Think about all the great people in coon hunting that probably wont be here in 15-20 more years.... This would be a way to archive the past from some of the greatest men in this sport.

I think we have too many internet trained hunters as there is and not enough hands on trained

I'm leaning towards just doing a blog, and maybe featuring some videos now and then. That way it would be free.
