House vs Monroe: Fued or Publicity Stunt?

Do any of you old timers remember in the 1970's the back and forth bickering via the coon hunting magazines ads between Joe House and John Monroe? Basically, a Joe House-Banjo strain vs. John Monroe - Finley River strain, much like the old "challenge ads" of the 60's, ala James Merchant.

Apparently, I think during the 1976 Autumn Oaks, then UKC Prez Fred Miller intervened and had both Monroe and House sign some kind of peace treaty to put it all to rest.

I always wondered if this a real feud between the two head strong Walker legends, or just a publicity stunt to promote both strains of hounds, with ole' Joe and John laughing in the background and raking in the dough with stud fees and pup sales.

Back in the 70's and early 80's, a Banjo X Finley River was a pretty complete walker dog, so maybe the feud ended up in a tie

I remember it, I think it was all publicity ,steal some of Timothy Ball's Wind ,,lol . Even Merchant and Buddy Gilbert had a few words back then too. Somewhere I saw a picture of the signed letter .

Was a feud over Finley River Chief being behind so many great dogs, just happened that Halls Dangerous Ranger had just won the UKC T.O.C. Hunt. House's Hank was his sire out of House's Tom Tom. The problem was Hank's dam was packing both Finley River Chief and Shetlers Sonny Boy in her 3 generation, that was what caused the fireworks. Monroe was right, the thing was both House's Chief and Finley River Chief about same place on pedigree, and Joe was still trying to find a stud to take ol' House's Chief's place.

Fights......

I heard a story, and might be false..........
Heard that the two were in a cast together at a big hunt and both there dogs were at the tree fighting, and at the same time John and Joe were over the hill fighting as well.......LOL.....

I remember Buddy Gilbert (crowding billy) getting into it with Joe House more than I do John Monroe. The good ole days. If we would have just had internet back then to keep up with what was going on instead of having to wait a month to read it in the American Cooner.
That is an interesting thought. How many of you guys in the instant world of information and expecting answers to your questions on here before you get them wrote could operate in in the world of magazines only. Waiting 30 days to find out an answer to something. We also need to remember back then FULL CRY and the AMERICAN COONER were the information highway. I remember the first Bloodlines Magazine and it was about 5 pages, same with the Prohound when it came out.

Lets not answer none of my thoughts on this post and get it off track. My mind wonders to much I just can't talk or type without rattling. I apologize and I don't want to hijack the post. Yes there were interesting things between the top men back then just like there is now.

I bet ya, things weren't so politacally correct back then! Alot of things were settled with their fists! Not saying these two gentlemen did that, and DEFINATELY not saying it was right, but things were done different back then.
I have a good buddy, who knew them both well, I think I will run this story by him, and see what he remembers!

Mr. Grande, please excuse my shifting off topic, but I've got two quick questions:

1. Was it your Mother, Father, or both who loved Mexican food?

2. Are you related to Nachos Bell Grande over by Springfield?

I was there, it was no joke. They had John, House and ukc meet at the hotel in Greencastle, In. John's brother Lee, Gordon Sutton and myself sat in the lounge with Dot House and two other guys. They would not let us in the meeting (wise choice). They did come to an agreement. John is still winning world hunts and I don't know what happened to House.

I am sure if someone asked john he would tell you the story, that guy is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to dogs and dog men

Might be a little hard asking Joe as he died a while back, and the last years he might or might not have remembered very much.

This was very similar to the story my buddy told me! He also said, Joe was a little more aggresive than John, and John just let his dogs do his talking for him!

Respect

Gentleman, I think a little respect is in order as Mr. Joe House passed away awhile back. you don't see Mr. Monroe on here yapping about who had what world champion. and as for dogs speaking for themselves you don't have to go back very far to find UKC WORLD CH HANDSOME HANK, UKC WORLD CH BATE'S CRYTICAL CHUCK AND 2 TIME WORLD CH, NATIONAL GR.NT.CH HOUSE'S MR. CLEAN. I believe these and many more before them have said enough. Lets let him rest in peace.....Jeff Duvall
