Wanting a new bear gun

Well I have been wanting a new bear gun. I have been using a 3030 but now I want to try something else. I want something with some knock down power when things go bad. I have been thinking of getting a 44mag. For one I would be able to carry it during training season with a carry permit. Second I was thinking of a 12 gauge with a red dot scope. Whats yalls opinion on these two. If I went with the 44 I would mpre than likely still be carrying my 3030. If yall think the shotgun would be better what setups and slugs would you recommend?

I use a Henry Big Boy in 44 40 and a Ruger super red hawk in 44 mag as my side arm.

A 12 ga shooting any kind of slug or pumpkin ball will knock one out or put it down right there... that's what I bear hunt with. A slug will leave an exit hole you can stick your fist in. If it gets up after that I'm heading for the truck wide open.

I've had bad experience with 44's got dogs hurt we dug 44 lead out of the hid and fat of bears so I'm not a fan the best bang for the buck is Remington 870 with rifled slug barrel with rifle sights you can get one for under 400.00 or find a used one cheaper than that but that's just my opinion everybody's got one but I have hunted for 20+ years with a marlin 35 rem

bear gun

I like my 44mag rugger carbine never had a problem stopping one on the ground seen one this year shot in the neck with 12 gauge slug just pissed him off you could stick your fist in the hole but it is all about shot placement

Bear Gun

Most 44 caliber guns wouldn't kill a flea. Try a 375

45-70 30-30 35 thats my 3 picks

Bear good

Agreed with dually, 44 mag.. In the ruger carbine model.. I have seen many bear expire with that caliber. shoot a 240 grain bullet...

SHOT PLACEMENT

I've hear alot of old timer talking about killing bear with 22LR. And know a older BEAR HUNTER that all he carries is a 22 Ruger semi auto pistol and has probably killed just as many bear with it as any one else. But I will never leave my 44 MAG RUGER CARBINE BEHIND, And will never leave the truck with out it and it has never failed me. I have seen bear pissed off by people shooting them with a 30-06. IT'S REALLY ALL ABOUT THE SHOT PLACEMENT.

I like a 44 or 45lc with a good bullet and a hot load to push it. but the biggest thing is being able to hit where you want to hit every time. Also I don't know about the laws where you are at but in Virginia what you can get by with carrying for a concealed weapon is left to the descrition of the game warden. I wouldn't dare carry my super redhawk and try to get out of it.

Idk a perfect setup for a slug gun but if you do go with a 12 Guage don't waste money on any other ammo you need to buy the brenneke black magic slugs in 3 in. When I hunted up in the u.p. Every bear harvested was killed with them they are absolutely devastating on a bear
