I disagree because your female had good blood in her show it was there she just didnt show it sounds like.

I remember my gpa raised bird dogs years ago and he said his best litters came from a female that didnt even want to hunt. He said she was a great family dog and the best mother of pups and come from good line of dogs. I think some are just good breeders.

i think so because she really had no hunt in her and she was a sweet dog just wanted to sit around and do nothing after the pups i gave her away to a guy who had kids and now he wants to give her away i am thinking about getting her back

Posted by bauerr on 09-25-2013 01:56 PM:

i would get her back if someone wanted a good breed female to raise some pups from i would give her away to someone who could use her

Posted by bauerr on 09-26-2013 09:50 PM:

JMO

You are lucky. I would not have intentionally bred a dog that wouldn't hunt herself. Too much of a chance of sending that trait along in the pups or their offspring. Seems to me to be a good way to ruin a good line of dogs. Glad to hear it worked for you but not sure I owuld recommend it for everybody.

hmmm

we never tied any gaffs on are hens and they sure gave us alot of good stags. Sure it would be nice if she was a top dog but look at doc bar, he was sold as a cull race horse. secretariet didnt produce nothing. if you have the time and money and the blood is good, dont let others detour your decisions.

how many people study gens on this sight and yes you r right about race horses it was a sham that old sec. never prod. anything worth a crap but he was the best horse out there. and my hatch cock has never won anything and my hens r all sisters and i will tell ya the cross works with this cock and hens i win about 80% with this cross could this be like makeing a cross with a dog you never know what your going to get. and i guess i got lucky because these pups r really nice pups. and yes i have put gaffs on a hen before and i would do it again because i haft to keep all of my hen in diff. pens. thanks guys just wanted to know how people felt and it looks to be 50-50 to me everyone has diff. opp.

Genetics are what they are. Hunting and seeing with your own eyes is exactly that. It doesn't change what she has going for her, it just lets you see it. On the flip side, if you never see anything....that doesn't change what she is either. At the end of the day she is what she is regardless if you ever see it. A bit more of a risk breeding that way because you have no idea what she is passing on, good or bad. But is doesn't change what she is or produces, period. I do believe that there are increased levels of chemicals passed in utero to the pups if you are actively hunting the female and stimulating her that way. I like to think it gives the pups a bit more. I have no idea if that sustains itself or for how long. It just suits me and gives me a sense of satisfaction and belief in the pup working out. Might be superstitious, who knows.

Bred a few dogs that wouldn't hunt and resulted in good pups and made great dogs . I'm voting on how you train them and how much they are exposed .
