Feeding a pup
I have a 4month old pup, thinking about putting her on a feeder.
Not sure how she will do , waste food or eat too much !
Has anyone had any prob with a young dog on a feeder?
Most likely she'll gorge herself. I have 3 here that are the same age. I guarantee you they would.
it has been my experience with feeders that a young dog will eat like hell for a bit , but once they realize the food doesn't run out they will taper off and eventually eat less than what you would feed on a daily basis . I don't use the feeders as a rule but young pups are never allowed to find an empty food bowl and they don't gorge their selves and when the bowl gets low it is filled back up . once they get use to it it will be the same .

I always put them on self feeders at weaning and usually take them off at around 4 months. Weaning to 4 months is the only time I use self feeders.

Pups
I have no facts or data to back this up but in my opinion I have always thought it was good for the pup to learn at an early age where the praise, discipline and groceries come from. Not to mention just gives you more oppertunity for possitive interaction with your pup. Also life lessons can be taught around a feed bowl!
Ive got a 5 month old pup thats been on a feeder since 6weeks it takes him 4 to 5 weeks to eat 40 lbs Im feeding diamond extreme athlete he wieghs around 50 lbs.

Alot of dogs don't have enough sense to be on a self feeder... But puppies need all the nourishment they can get so give them all the feed they want.
There are alot of things that come into play if you are trying to keep an adult dog in tip top shape and performing at its peak level. What it eats, when it eats, and how much it eats are very important factors... Even if a dog has enough sense to moderate its eating on a self feeder it's still not a very good idea..... You would most definitely not want to go run a marathon on a full stomach an dogs are the same way... So for adult dogs it a no no but you can't go wrong with feeding a pup as much as it can eat...
I just feed mine table scraps mixed with ol Roy!!

this can get to be a deep subject... some is good and some not so good
I personally believe that the more daily contact one has with a young hound the better they will handle.. BUT
there are cases when that is not possible
in the early 80 my job situation was such that I was away from home every week. (weekend hunter).. that made care of the hounds due a change. I went to self feeders and wash tubs for water. tank hearers keep water from freezing.
self feeders most hounds will adjust the amount they eat in 2-3 weeks and will not eat as much as if they were hand fed. there were 3 exceptions to that that I experienced..
one was a big female I got from Fletcher Jowers named Sugar Bear-- she would never stop eating and would clean out 40 lbs in a week and got as big as a 55 gallon barrel--
I can think of maybe one other that got too fat.
-- another I had was Hank that I gave to Richard Washington.. he would rake all the feed out of the feeder and if it rained it was wasted.
I now have a female approaching 2 years old that will scratch feed out and sort it--- the feed I am feeding has some small pellets in it slightly less than 1/4 in... the rest is rather normal size---
anyway she does not like those small nuggets.
Plan "B' on her --hand feed and she cleans it all up!
You ever tried those cow pellets?

I have been putting my pups on self feeders until I switch them to big dog food. Works great and I do not any problem with them over eating if anything they probably eat less.
