some advice please

I have a 7 month old dog and just doesn't show much interest in coons and wont bark on track or tree any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks

Still somewhat just a little young in my opinion. Try put the pup up a few months then try it again. On the other hand some are just duds and not a thing you can do for them.

Just keep petting him and taking him to the woods as many trips as you can. Don't even start to worry till he is 11 months old. Then you can ask for more advice but right now your puppy is just that, a puppy. He at this point has the same mentality as a 10 year old boy, so don't ask him to start fist fighting just yet. Let him mature up a little and the natural ability will start to come out.

What have you done thus far with him????

I know some guys buy a coon hound breed and take it to the woods and 1000% expect it to tree a coon because it is a coon dog....ive owned and handled a few dogs...never had one tree a coon before I showed it to tree a coon..

he has seen about 2 cage coons but didn't show much interest I have worked with him on a rag quite a little bit and when I take him out at night should I take him with other dogs? or just let him run around without him having a clue of what hes doing?

Show him a caged coon with an older dog that will work a caged coon...then let them tree it.....then knock it out dead and let him chew on it....

Then take him to the woods with a good older dog or alone..

The best thing you can do is expect nothing from him/her that way you'll never be disappointed. All dogs learn at thier own pace.

I agree ifnyouve already tried with an older dog pit the pup up another couple months or even till fall...no sense in trying when it ain't ready....if they don't work and tree a caged coon they ain't ready IMO

i wouldnt worry about him yet,hes still a puppy.

I have a 4 year old dog that has never wanted anything to do with a cage coon, or a drag, and he was two years old before he started doing anything at all. He's a pretty decent hound now though, at least I think he is.

So don't get ahead of yourself.

Im going to take him out hunting with another more experienced hound ill let you guys know how it goes after this weekend if he doesn't show any interest ill put him up for a few months I appreciate all of you guys advice im just a kid this is my first hound I have ever trained so all the advice I can get helps. Thanks

Posted by skeets on 04-06-2013 11:41 AM:

cooner dont worry bout that dog yet,ive seen several coon dogs that wouldnt pay a cage coon no mind at all.you can do what you think is right for that dog,but i would hunt him, hunting a young dog will make them mature faster then anything i know of.iam different from everybody else,i walk hunt and ill start takeing a pup to the woods at 2 months old,ill just let them do what ever they what ever their instinct tells them to do,but they will start matureing pretty fast usually and most times they will be treeing their own coons by the time their 12 to 14 months old.i got a cur i trained this way right now and hes 15 months old,he started treeing coons at 12 months old,he aint a coon dog yet but he aint far from it.good luck with your dog.
