Coon huntin and deer hunters!
Most deer clubs want let us hunt. Claim we run all the deer off. Somebody didn't tell this one. Dog treed only about 75 yards past him. I walked right up on him. He just got up and walked off. Took this with my phone. He was close!!

Walked within 20 feet of a doe and yearling two nights ago and they never moved. Matter of fact have did it many times. I had a non be leaving deer hunter with me about a month ago and we walked right up on two bedded down. The dog was treed about 50 yards beyond us. What made it so nice was we where talking about deer being run off by hounds 30 minutes before that.
we were hunting on lay lake one night it was me,keith durkee, shane white and david lawley and i think adam singleton the dogs treed on this steep hill side as we were walken down there where three lil young does layen on that hill side about 75 yards like yours and they didnt move until we started up the hill and i tryed to catch one! hahaha got close but she was just to fast

Amazing how the deer will lay tight while a dog runs a track and/or trees fairly close to it....ive gotten dang close to some...
Unless you got a dog that gets after deer, i haven't seen an effect of coon hunting on deer hunting...
A few times ive found smokin hot spots while coon hunting..went back to the truck and grabbed the stand and carrried it.in and had an.amazing hunt the next.morning...

Unlike deer hunters the deer as a group have some sense and know we don't want to waste our time with them. (notice I didn't say all deer hunters.
Deer hunters I have found out tend to get a bit upset when you point out that deer are just another trash animal like possums, coyotes and armadillos. I hunt them too but as I have said many times I can't get excited over a critter that you keep your dog from wasting its time with.
Slobbermouth, do I know you?

Its real funny
Some deer hunters in my area hate my guts and some come over all time and ask me were then big daddy's are!I don't deer hunt but keep track were I see the big ones and write it all down I can tell u about were to put there stands and come very close they do some miner adjustments and they get the wall hangers! This fall turned 3 dog loose in corn field before the opened a Hugh buck come running around the edge of field within 20 yards before stopping he thought the dogs were a does he never ran just stood there listening to the dogs trying to find that does he heard! I always tell them not to use me as a excuse that they suck at deer hunting and that's the truth!

Was on a nite hunt once with four dogs treed, four hunters looking up the tree and talking. Two deer were less than 50 yards away eating and watching us.
I have walked up on many bedded deer over the years and they often don't get up unless you walk up to them.

Heck the largest deer ever killed on my ranch was killed the morning after at the same corn feeder where 3 coon were shot and killed the night before. I've had hounds that would run deer if they came across them and they might have run an hour or more before I catch them. The deer run a pretty wide circle back to the place of beginning. Those dog chasing deer didn't run'em off. Out coon hunting one time on another ranch (right before deer season) I was hitting all the corn feeders for these guys....to thin out their coon population. I treed one coon pretty far away in his den. After i got to the den I remembered passing a deer stand with an extension ladder on it. I went back a got that ladder and drug that thing all the way to to den tree. When I climbed up to the to and looked down in that hollow.... Yep, had the meat! I wonder what that man thought on opening day when he went to get into his deer stand and couldn't!!! Wonder if he found his ladder?
There is no greater waste of time than trying to reason with a deer hunter.

Im blessed with alot of great hunting spots, i loose about half of them from oct. thru the first of the year. It wasnt so bad when deer season was a couple weeks long but now the state has discovered theres a bunch of money to be made from all these special seasons.
Jim has it right, you absolutly cant explain to a deer hunter that our dogs dont bother the deer, all you do by trying is risk loosing the spot alltogeather.

quote:JIM you got that right!!!! I have a really good friend whose daddy got me to coon hunting 30 years ago. This friend of mine coon hunted too up until about 3 years ago. I can't tell you how many times he and I coon hunted at night and deer hunted in the day on his and my place. Well, you guessed this coming....a few BIG deer were spotted about 3 years ago and now he doesn't allow any coon hunting on or near his place. I've tried to reason with him and even asked him why he feels this way...he of all people should know better. I might as well have beat my head against an oak tree!!!

What I don't understand is when I lived in Jax Fl. folks ran deer with dogs and they would join the same club year after year! Why....cause you can't run them off! I'm like y'all, when I go down to visit, I hardly have a place to hunt any more!
Paul
ive had my blue dog run past a herd of about 20-25 deer and the just stared while she was chasin a coon through a cut corn field but my dad wont let me hunt her on our property were theres more coon then deer
i believe it more of the promotional hunters you see on tv that have put a bad taste in deer hunters mouths towards coon hunters...i ran deer with dogs from the time i was old enought to go hunting i like running deer with dogs over sitten over a green field or corn because i feelit give the deer a chance to live to see another day while if he comes to the green field of corn pile im hunting there is a really good chance he just ate his last meal. same with coon hunting with dogs it gives the coons a fair chance..i might not go hunt these high fences and guided hunts like the pros. but you never see them hunting on wma do you?? hahah well except for a few and i mean a few.
