Breeding Question.

Ok. Let's hear the pros and cons of breeding a coming 10 yr old female that's never been bred.I've owned her for 9 of these yrs.. I just never wanted to. I wanted to hunt her. Now she's slowing down some. I don't hunt her regularly much anymore. Have I waited to late? Should I try and get something off her before its forsure to late? She's in pretty good shape for a 10 yr old. I just don't want to kill her with pups is the hold up. What yall think?

A friend of mine has a 9 year old female that has had a few litters . The last two heat cycles she was bred with no luck.

i know of a 10 yr old that got bred and did fine with pups. that was her first and last litter. i say go ahead, but do so knowing there could be complications.

If its gonna be warm weather just make sure she has a cool place and I'd give here milk aid before and after she has pups. Maybe ask about a good vitamin to start her on.
With her being old she may not take or may not have many, I don't think it would put her in no danger.

Older female breeding...

GA DAWG... Dr. Law's first female was an 11 year old NtCh with
Heavy House breeding. She only had 5 pups with one being born dead and she laid on one. The 3 that survived are as nice a pups as a man could ask for. Plus, they carry some excellent old blood that is hard to come by. I would do it again for sure.

Only 1 way

There's only one way to know for sure. Sometimes they don't take at that age. They may miscarry or be still born. Some folks believe they are past there genetic prime at that age. If they are born the litter may not be a big one. It could pose heath risks for your female. If you really want to try it be optimistic and do it.

I agree x2!!! Oxy mate/oxy momma is GOOD stuff!!

Mr. Leroy Perry suggested it to us when we drew semen off of our 13 year old male dog and AI'd our female. She was 7 at the time, she had 3 pups. One dead male and two strong healthy females! That was a great success considering his age/condition! We fed him the oxy mate and it did improve his sperm count & quality.

Sorry to get off topic but I think you should breed your female if you think she is healthy and in good shape. There's always a chance of complications with any female no matter what her age is. I would also consider ordering some oxy mate & or oxy mate.

If she only has a few that will be ok. I ain't doing it to sell em. Im doing it to hopefully have something else to hunt 10 yrs. My luck though she want reproduce squat. Don't you have to do something special to register them with old females? I've read that before.

You'd register them just like any other litter...

If she's healthy go for it. If you don't you will always wonder "what if" 10 is not too terribly old.

You're planning to breed her to Brummy right? LOL

Thats one of the pro's to breeding an older female you probably wont get many pups.

As you probably know, I'd get her or keep her in shape and she'll be fine.

Years ago got a female that had a dandy pedigree of some old blood she was between 9 and 10. This female also was never bred before. We didn't get to bred her until she was almost 11. Everything went good until it was time for the pups to be born. She had one stuck half way out of her, back feet first. We rushed her to Vet for emergency C section. She had 3 large pups, all dead. Vet recommended to spaded her then also to help make the rest of her life better since she was that old. I wish we could have gotten the pups, but it didn't work out that way. After it was all said and done, I wished I wouldn't have put her through that. But I wanted pups out of her and I took the chance, it just didn't work out well for me.

Dogs age relative to humans

Sort of like a 65 year old woman having her first child.

I have also seen something about registering litter from older female. I think 10 was the limit. it may have been dna or a vet certificate or something.

off the litter application:
Note: Dam must be between 10 months and 10 years of age at the time of breeding.
Note: Sire must be between 8 months and 12 years of age at the time of breeding.
