Tight Mouth

I have a 3 year old male walker dog that is very tight on track... But recently he starting opening up and running a track very well but will just locate and never sit down treed... But when he is tight on track and just opens when he is treed he has a coon every time... My question is what could he be running when he opens on a track? Cause when he opens he will never tree it he will fool with it for like 30 minutes or so... Me and my grandfather thinks it is a bobcat cause he just hits a tree then goes on and keeps running.... Any ideas will be appreciated.... Thanks

We thought of that too. But usually we can tell if it is cold because he gone for about an hour or so before he trees and it usually a den.. But bout 99% of the time he wont tree on it and sometimes it will run very hot then very cold..

We have thought about a fox too.. we want to put the shock collar on him... But we want to catch him the act before we do that..

yall have any fox pens in your area take him to one let him get it going then shock him you are right dont shock him if you dont know for sure what he is running you could really screw him up jmo

Thats what we were scared of is ruining him if we shock him on something we dont know what it is for sure.... I need to find a bobcat hide or something to see if thats what it is...

i would like to find out what it is... But he doesn't do it that often.. But when he opens i know he is running wrong cause every time he it tight on track and just goes in there and locates and trees he has a coon every time..

I vote for the yote faceoff. I've seen it happen...dog stationary and barking, and then opens on track and moves off in the distance and it happens again. Took me a while to figure out a dog like that several years ago.

Not likely a bobcat. In my limited experience (treed a few but don't hunt them and the few I treed were accidental/trash to me), a bobcat will stay treed until it sees your light coming and then bail out. Sometimes they stay and you can catch the dogs and see the cat, but sometimes they bail.

But the dogs tree just fine til the cat bails and it will be a red hot track away from the tree. It is pretty frustrating when you are tryin to catch them but it's a pretty easy thing to tell. I don't hunt bobcats but I have heard they stay better if you wait a long time before going to the tree. I can't say either way cause we don't hunt them and we figgure it out after they leave the stinkin tree hot on it again. I had one dog that would tree one when nothin else was stirrin. I always hated it when she would do that. Haven't treed any since she died just off the top of my head. She proabably treed 5 or 6 in her entire life. Certianly not enough to draw any conclusions from, I was just giving you my experience.

You DON'T want your dog to catch one of those things, they can really hurt a dog.

Thanks for you experience man.. He doesn't do it enough for it be a real big hassel.. Cause more times than not he wont even tree it.. He will just tap the tree and move on.. And he will usually be back to the truck in about 30 minutes or so...

Beats me. Unless you do have coyotes all over the place. But a dog running full cry and then fizzling sure beats me.

I'd say coyote or fox..Its something that want climb..A bobcat will do as Rip described..I've got after a few of them..Is he leaving out pretty quick with the track?? Making circles or straight lining it??

I had one that was silent on a coon but opened a lot when running trash. It is simple, just shock him when he starts opening on track. Does it really matter what it is? It isn't a coon or he would not be opening on track.

he maybe running a mink hounds well tree and tree and tree alot of times on creeks and ponds i have had a few tree minks and back track them for hours if you have a good snow hunt him and
youll see small tracks. good luck j lewis
