News Flash on the Purina Race

The Purina race just got a whole lot more interesting! I guess I never really looked at the Georgia State hunt and the Battle of the Breeds hunt dates. Traditionally they have always been on the same weekend. THIS YEAR THEY ARE NOT! Georgia State is the first weekend of December and the Battle of the Breeds is on the second weekend. This means that there are four more nights of hunting for the Purina race.

You know, I was curious to if that was a misprint in the magazine or what. Looks like the guys over in Georgia knew the race was going to be close and decided to make the stakes a little higher. This should be one of the best races ever!

Three hounds nose to nose this is good looks like old Droop Jr. will finish third or fourth, and the other dog could do the same with half the points of the winning dog ....Oh well I suppose there must be a 3rd, 4th and so on.

After hunting with the 5th place dog

I wouldnt be to proud of the way she got there, had her owner plead on the hood of the truck that our small score wouldnt do us any good and he was running the race and needed it . This was all after a very rotten under hand ? he called after the fact that caused the deserving dog a cast win.
Not impressed to say the least!!!!!

Purina Race

I have nothing at all invested in the Purina Race but I will say that it has kept my attention all year long and and I 've enjoyed watching the race develop. It's not a secret that I'm partial to females and I want to take this opportunity again to say thanks to Todd Mathewson for allowing me to come up and hunt with him and the fine female Moonlight Kate. Thanks to the top three for making this thing so exciting and Fireball........However this thing turns out.... You and Kate are a great team !! Good Luck

Re: After hunting with the 5th place dog

That just goes to show that a lot of these so called high class dogs are infact man made coon dogs. Its all in the handling. And that is ashame. Cut the dogs loose and let the best dog win. I don't mind getting beat by a coondog, but it kills me to have my dog get cheated.

Never cease's to amaze me about this board. I don't often reply on here and very seldom do I turn it on but more stuff get's started on here than should. For everyone who complains that they got out handled or that Purina guy did this or that or ?? something you should try it. These men run thousand's of miles and spend thousand's of dollars and hunt in everyone else's backyard and every weekend every cracker jack handler come's out of the cracker jack box wanting to draw these dogs and handlers. If you listen at the hunt these cracker jacks want to show them Purina boys a thing or 2! Think for a minute the dog is doing his part and looks good but that fella handling just doesn't do his part well then he let his dog down by not knowing the rules but to hear some folks he cheated because he ?? something and won the ??! Now on the other hand maybe the dog is so so tonite and the handler did ?? something and he won because of it he still did his part because he knew the rule and spoke up. Now should he have not spoken up and let his team down? I don't think so! People don't need to complain about it if they don't know the rules and if they do know and they still feel like they got cheated then there is a procedure for that also. Good hunting to the Purina Gentlemen and to all you hunters and I will say from experience of running several Purina Races and winning one you boys sure have kept it exciting!! Good Luck to each of you!! See Ya somewhere on the road! I'm outta here!

just because they spend thousands of dollars and drive thousands of miles doesn't mean they have the right show out or whatever happened in the situation mentioned above. I give them credit for what they do, but they are no more important than any other hunter out there. infact, because of all the attention they get, I would think they would be on their extra best behavior.

Kevin,

I totally agree with you. Over the past 15+ years I have had the opportunity to draw out with and/or judge several of the dogs who have won the Purina Points. I have found these men to be everyday people. They are always packing a quality hound and don't need to out handle anybody. They let the dogs speak for them. I am not saying that they don't question calls but they do it the right way and accept the decision. If you feel that you have been cheated by them I would guess that the calls didn't go your way and now you don't want to admit you got beat. I see that every weekend I go to a hunt. Somebody had a rough dog or a cheater in their cast. Guys are always looking for an excuse. Just my opinion.
