how too break a dog

I got a young male that just loves too catch possums and kill the dang things.I cant stand that he loves them dang things so much.I dont know if its because we aint got a lot of coons here or if he is just that much in love with those things.I watched him tree an easy one on opening night so i know he can tree a coon, but that has been it.I like him a lot,but i dont know how much more of that i can take.He is a year and a half old,i would figure he should be over that by now.He has had a plenty of fur in his mouth.

I've tried a few things with my nite Ch and every once in awhile she will catch one on the ground and destroy it and move on. Ive found that if you use a shock collar walk in catch them red handed walk away and shock the dickens out of them and they will get the idea better then beating on them. I've heard of shooting them down and putting ammonia on them and letting the dogs have them but that is just plain stupid in my book (why shoot anything down that they are not supposed to have) Good luck,And be consistant with it. I had the same problem ,she was catching them on the ground more then treeing them.

Have a 2 year old female that is the same way.The bad thing is that when she catches one or trees one she leaves it when i get about half way to her.But when she trees a coon she will always be at the tree.Been working on her pretty hard with the shocker.

Had a young dog that just plain loved them. Started on them and I never got him broke. He would tree harder on a possum than a coon. I tired shocking and whooping.....didn't seem to matter.

i tie the dog back and shoot them out and then i have a session with the dog. never have a problem with them after that. good old fashion possum a$$ whipin and i mean whipin. there lots of ways to break them you just hope your dog is'nt that hard headed when it comes down to breaking them.

possum's

road your dog ,until you find a possum . take your dog to it on a lead strap. the second he show interest , give him a full 12 sec. shock . then bump him two or three times on the way back to the truck. repeat a couple more times . take him home , lay him up two days , and repeat . do the same thing over a couple week period. should solve your problem. ( no coon hunting during this time frame).

I would never shoot one out ,myself , put dog in the dog box with shoker ,drive around run across live possum run him down catch him throw him in the box with dog lay it to him with shocker 3 4 times ,drive around for bout hr shock him bout every 10 or 15 min there after go home leave dog in box ,go to bed set your alarm for every 2 hrs till time to go to work ,put dog up for 2days after that 2 day lay up hunt him with a good cooner a night or two and repeat as needed

I tried that with my old dog and even had my buddy work her over with one in a small hollow stump. For a good 15 mins she just kept coming back. But put a little juice to her and she was gone.Very determined to get a possum that was right in front of her but hit her on 3/4 on the shocker and gone...

some dogs you can beat them once . .. others you can beat till your blue in the face

shocking is probably most effective to break a dog,

by all means! get some possum breaking scent from your sporting goods store or oder it from someplace, find a farmer nearby with elctric fences and get his permission to tie some cloth strips to his fence, as many as you can muster, tie them on, where you hunt, and douse them with that breaking scent, turn your dog loose, be a coondog before morning guaranteed! hope this helps!

Back before SHOCK COLLARS,

were reliable & wouldn't reach out a quarter of a mile in certian terrian, here's what I would do. Get an ELECTRIC FENCE CHARGER & mount it close to an electrical outlet. Run an INSULATED wire out to your dog pen or where you have your dog tied. You will want the end of your wire to hang down from above, away from trees & fences, etc. STRIP off about 3-5 FEET of the INSULATION at the end of the wire. Get what ever you are trying to break your dog off of (opossum, skunk, deer gland, etc.) & WRAP the BARE WIRE AROUND & AROUND what ever your trying to break your dog off of, the more wraps the better. KEEP IT FRESH & SMELLING STRONG. It won't hurt to leave about 6 inchs to a foot of the very end of the wire sticking straight out, KINK the very end so there is not a sharp point sticking out. FIX IT so it will hang about a FOOT ABOVE the ground, & turn the JUICE ON, It will be working 24/7
