Unless you know what type of worm it is I would give him a Drontal. It will kill all worms.

Should be able to get it at any vet. If there are no worms in his stool then you could try an over the counter wormer like safeguard first.

wormer

I use Ivomec 4 Heartworm use - .10 cc per 10 Lbs
4 Intestinal worms use .10 cc per 10 Lbs
I give mine .10 cc per 10 lbs once a month for heartworms and every 3 months I double it to get the intestinal worms along with the heartworms. I got a chart from my vet . Make sure your dog doesn't have heartworms before you give the double dosage vet told me if the dog did have heartworms the double dosage could kill the worms and in result kill your dog.

panacur: If it is not in the stool it could be hook worms, pin worms, or tape worms. Panacur will kill them all. Give it to them 3 days in a row.

Drontral Plus will get all intestinal parasites. Fenbendazole which is Safegaurd and Panacur will get everything except tapeworms. If you are not seeing something that looks like rice in the dogs stool then it probably does not have tapeworms. The best thing to do if there are no tapes is to go to the feed store and buy a 125 ml bottle of Safegaurd Goat Wormer (about $15). Give the dog 1.1 ml for every 5 pounds of body weight. That would be 11 ml (cc) for a 50 pound dog. You need to give this three days in a row. There will be enough in the bottle to worm a 50 pound dog for 1 year if you do this once every 3 months.

Panacur kills most of the common worms but does not kill the most common tapeworm. Dorantal (praziquantel) will kill tapeworms and most other worms. When I get a new dog in, I like to give it a dose of praziquantel and three days of Panacur. You can buy Panacur under the name of Safe Guard at places like farm supply stores, Petco, and Petsmart. Praziquantel is sold under several brand names, Tradewind is one I think.

You can also use a heartworm preventative called Iverhart Max. I can get it for less than a dose of Dorantal at the vet. It contains ivermectin, pyrantel pamoate, and praziquantel. A monthly dose of that stuff keeps most worms out of the household.

There are a couple of types of worms that aren't covered by this type of attack because the wormers are only effective during a certain stage of the worms development. A formal fecal test is the only way to know that you are covering the right bases. For me, however, I hit them hard when the come in (unless they have serious diaherra) and then test a couple weeks later. That way I don't have to test twice since the test is typically more expensive than the treatment.

The amount of fenbendazole for different species of animals varies quite a bit. I took the mg of Fenbendazole found in the safeguard canine wormer and simply applied it to the goat wormer, therefore I'm getting the recommended canine dosage of the active ingredient, fenbendazole. You may google it and find that the canine dosage is 22.7 mg per pound. SG goat wormer is a 10% solution (100mg per ml). That means it would take 1135 mg for a 50 pound dog (22.7 X 50). To get 1100 mg you would need 11 ml (cc). Must be given at least 3 days in a row to be effective. My vet usually suggest 5 days in a row.
