never seen it done however if a person had a disability that prevented them from gaiting the dog i guess it might be permitted but if it could be done for a disabled person i sure would ask ukc for a written letter allowing it

Hmm I don't know...UKC might be fooling around with the Americans With Disabilities Act. JMO
we went through this at one show in our area. the official reply was that someone could walk with the disabled person to assist them as long as the disabled person had hold of the dog. also someone was allowed to place the dog on the bench but the disabled person had to set it up.

Handling...
this was brought up for Autumn Oaks... maybe this is where you got the idea from? I would personally double check with UKC as rules are constantly being reviewed and updated.

No idea but it would surely need to be for a very good reason to even be considered.
the situation i spoke of was a disabled boy who had cerebal palsey and had one arm and hand that had very little muscle control.
i got to thinking about this. would the situation you're talking of be a person in a wheelchair? at a lot of shows a wheelchair bound person would be hard pressed to gait a dog. but their disability should not cause them to be denied a chance to participate.

2007 at A.O.was a man on cruches that had to do it all gait and the bench.Haven't ever seen a swap of handlers done.Good?
I sent an email to UKC and asked about this as I have an "issue" with jogging or much of anything faster then a walk and they said ...
"UKC rules require only one handler per dog, therfore, we would suggest the handler be able to properly handle the dog for evaluation in all aspects including gaiting the dog properly. "
I'm sorry but it's not fair to deny someone the ability to show their own dog because of a disability. The UKC is essentially denying access to people who are disabled. THAT is gonna come back and bite them one day. It is illegal.
I to have seen handicapped handlers several times over the years and they did a good job. As far as jogging there's many that can't do that who are not disabled.
I've seen the crutches and it worked and I guess a wheelchair would also but if you can't do that much I don't really know how you could do the rest on the bench. At some point if it is impossible to actually handle your dog I think a friend or family member would have to handle your dog. Not talking about being denied the right to but it being physically impossible.
I've been away from hunting for about 14 years and just getting back into it. I loved the bench shows. I layed my Grand show champion walker to rest about 3 years ago. When did they start the gainting? When I was showing my dogs, we walked to the bench and handled our dogs and got judged. If you won you breed you went on to the best of show and done the same thing. The judge decleared the winner as they were on the bench. I was just wandering when this started? I'm getting back into the sport and will proubully look into the shows again. I had alot of fun as a kid doing it and hope my kids get as much out of it as I did.
ive been judging since 1981 and gaiting was then already
Listen most of us that have some sort of a disability know what our limits are. I am fortunate enough that my disability ( I lost my right eye to cancer when I was 3) has very rarely slowed me down. But there are things that I can not or will not do due to this fact. I understand how it feels to be told that you can not or should not do something because of your disability, it makes you that much more determined.....
That being said, If a person can show there dog with their disablity they should be allowed to. No one is ever gong fault the handler in this type of situation. But if that person is not able to show within the rules then they should find an alternate handler.
I personally know that I do not or nor have I ever wanted any special treatment or help to accomplish anything that I have ever accomplished. I played every sport I could, I learned to shot a gun left handed so I could hunt and so forth. You learn to adapt your world but sometimes we have to admit there are things that we just can not do.
I truly admire anyone with diabilities for anything they accomplish in there lives.
