Lyme Disease ?
I have a 5 year old dog that has Lyme Disease. The bad thing about it is I have only gotten a few ticks off of him the whole year. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this. I have taken him to the vet and he put him on antiobiotics for 20 days. He has been on antibiotics now for 7 days. He still doesn't act like he feels good. Does anyone now how long lyme disease normaly takes to work it's course?
It depends on the strengh of the infection and the overall health of your hound...We in New England have our hounds exposed tp this year round...Some hounds have the disease and show little or no symptoms at all..I've had hounds being treated looked great in week and others it took longer sometimes up to a month...Just be patient and your hound will bouce back as good as ever..
Do you think I should exercise him or let him take it easy?
Give him time to recover...If he appears to become more active then exercise him....If he becomes himself before the meds are finished ease him back to hunting...
lyme
My brothers gr.nt.ch. died from lime disease once he realised something was wrong he took him to the vet. they started treatments, he lasted for a month. The vet said he had it for a couple years, he showed no symptons until about a month before he died. I suggest everyone get the blood test once a year and treat it before it gets bad.the blood test will check for lyme and heart worms.
The vet didn't say anything about how long he had it. I am curiouse to know. The blood test that the vet did on my dog tested for lyme disease, heart worms, and eurlekia. Eurlekia has become a big problem in eastern NC. I had a yard dog die a couple of years ago and I think that is what he had according to the symptoms.
Lyme Disease
We have all our dogs (16 of them) tested and three had Lyme Disease this year. One is an old retired bear dog. He was pretty bad off but he is good as new now. It took all of a month to recover with meds. The other bear dog is doing better too. The third has never shown any signs. All the ones that are negative have had the vaccine. They will get it annually now with the other shots. It has been really bad in our area. We also spray our kennel every two weeks and clean out the boxes and put new shavings in as well. It has been paying off.

I didn't know about a shot. I will check on that. Thanks,
Lyme Vaccine
I bought 20 doses to give our dogs. 1 ml shot and then another three weeks later. After that you give it annually with the distemper. We have given the shot to all our negative dogs. We are ridden with ticks in our area so it is important to keep them free of the disease. There are two types of manufactures. Brand names Recombitek Lyme and Lyme Vac. It says it protects up to 90% to 95% of the time and if they do contract the disease it can be treated easily. We spoke to several vets and did some research before deciding to do the vaccines. We also sprayed our kennel inside and out with Permictrin II which is the safest thing we could find locally. We have been tick free so far. I do the treatment every two to three weeks. It is worth it to us since our dogs are always out hunting and in the woods.
If you are interested you can find them inexpensively on the web. The cost at the vet was double and with 16 dogs that can be expensive.

Question: Will the lyme disease always show up positive even after treatment? or if positive do you repeat the treatment? My dog tested positive and shows no sign of the disease. My vet said that he has only ever had one other dog test positive. He said it still tested positive after two rounds of antibiotics and never got sick or showed any symtoms either?? Any advice appreciated.

Rusty,
It is my understanding they will most likely test positive once they have limes. For sure if given the vaccine.
I also had a dog that didnt seem quite "right" to me, after asking my vet to do the limes test he was amazed it came back positive as she had no symtoms.
I dont think your alone at all, Its a difficult thing to put your arms around because the effects are subtle in some dogs, Im not sure my dog was ever the same.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I was under the understanding that you never "cure" Lyme Disease. I believe you only put it into remission.

You are right, from what I understand. There is no cure. My son had tick fever and that went into Lupus. He's grown now, but still hets head aches and can not stand the heat.
Good luck to you all! Take care of you and yours!

lime disease is wide spread more than most people think.
it is very prevlant in people. recent studies show 9 out of 10 people have some form of it just dont know it.
most dont know they have it. 9it is treatable
there are around 30 diff symptoms
most widely known are
arthritus
alshimers
spelling may not be correct but .....
you must ask your doctor to check for it or they just wont do it.
if you get treated for it and cured they lose money.
dogs also show the same symtoms
