I've always shown mine cage coon and they seem to turn out alright. If a dog is going to be a hunter there isn't much you can do to change it. Letting them have a chance to get excited about the game they are going to hunt shouldn't hurt them any. Just don't bore them with it.

I wouldn't show one to a 4 month old pup. You can certainly ruin a dog with too many cage coon, but 1 or 2 when they're ready to start hunting, at maybe 9 or 10 months old is a good way to start. It'll also tell you if they're ready to start yet. If they dont fire up, put them away for 2 months and try 1 again. I honestly feel that they should never see a caged coon again after they're running and treeing. Also, 2 to 3 maximum in theur life suits me, more than that and you're opening a can of worms.

It's more about how the dog reacts to the coon than the simple act of showing the coon to dog. Some dogs at 4 months would go crazy and try to get the coon, and some would get so scared that they would never want to have any thing else to do with a coon. That's how you break a dog-- they won't run trash because they are scared of the punishment. I personally don't see any advantage to showing caged coons to dogs.

If I will I have sure ruined a bunch of em.

I hardly ever hunt a pup with other dogs untill it can run and tree its own coon on a consistent basis. I start every one of them on live trapped coon and release coon.

4 months or 10 months doesnt matter as long as you dont force them to work it. Let them decide when there big enough, and keep them from getting mauled and you wont have any problems.

I have a bunch of live traps and just take the pup for a walk. If he notices a coon in one of the traps, I turn it loose and see if they can tree it. If they dont notice or act like there scared of it, I come back later and turn the coon (s) back loose.

Now showing one hung in a tree (treeing contests, water races, ext.) bunchs of times is a different story and they WILL tree by site alone before long.

I thought you were just screwing around but I personally won't show a 4 month old pup a live coon.
