Which do you prefer?

Do you like a hound that is under 75lbs or over 75lbs?
The first pup we ever bought was off a dog that was 65lbs. I had the choice of this sire of 65lbs or a sire named Big Daddy at 125lbs. To me there was no choice but the smaller hound. JMO but i've never understood why people would want a hound that is 100lbs plus. Too big a dog for me, I dont want to have to feed what it would take to maintain a hound of that size. Biggest hound i own is 63lbs.

I agree

I prefer a female between 45 and 55 pounds whereas a male I prefer between 50 to 65 pounds max......Not saying I would'nt hunt a top notch dog weighing 80 pounds, just not my preference at all.

To me a 50-60 lbs female and a 60-70 lbs male are what i want. I am, however, a sucker for a big Red-headed 85+lbs male dog if they are built right. Size never enters in to my decision to buy a dog. However big or small, it just depends on how they get through the country. Some of those 90 pounders will suprise you with how fast they are and how much endurance they have.

i like the coonhounds to be 50-60 pounds just think if your dog got badly hurt try carrying a 100pound dog out of the woods

Posted by Melanie H. on 01-31-2007 06:22 PM:

I like the smaller size dogs.. Females between 40-50lbs and males 55-65lbs. I think that they get around a bit easier in the brush and I think that they hold up better in the long run. There are some big heavy dogs that last a long time for what we ask them to do, but I have found that the smaller more compact dogs last even longer. And we push them pretty hard during cat and bear season.

I dont care how big or small they are as long as they have a nice houndy head and tree coon. I dont care for the long thin faces in some hounds.

I prefer

something that will run and tree a coon. Don't matter the size or color or breed but have plenty of stay power along with the tree. So if it is 75 lbs or 25 lbs don't really matter to me.

I like 'em big too BilliJo. My Dancer is a little petite Princess...she looks good and performs well at 48-50#. Now, those boys are bigguns. Smoke goes from 79-100#, I can deal with him. Rowdy goes from 85-100#, Dave has to lead him, he's young yet and strong as a horse. Only way for me to handle him is if he knows he's showing and I use a chain choker....He'll calm down some day....

same here, 50-60 is plenty i think. I'd hate to know how much a 100 lb. dog eats and how much you'd have to clean up each week.

honestly my 85 pointer eats less than the coonhounds, as a dog is bigger they need more feed but also depends on how easy they are to keep.
