Deep and alone, or close with multiple coons?

About every ad you read for a dog on here talks about how deep and alone their dog or pups will be.
What wins more hunts? Deep and alone, or three trees next to the truck.

??

With 3 dogs deep and alone, one close, it is important to have a coon in your tree, some casts will eat up the time.Being deep and alone assures no rough dogs coming in.

3 by the truck fits my plans just right but in real life its not how it works. The dogs that fly through the country and get treed are good at it. They can have it done about as fast as the other one can at the truck. So in reality you get one treed by the truck and spend the rest of the night walking to the other dogs. If they bark off the chain and get struck first your beat.

No leash lock and tree countdown stops a lot of that.

i think that hunting style is more geared towards comp hunts- being deep and alone is going to eat up time. but. then again- that dog that trees 3 coons by the truck, while deep and lonely dog is still trying to get away from the other dogs, is going to look mighty good to me.

When Dark won a world hunt last year, she was Alone and I could be wrong but it seemed like she was taking tracks as she came to them. But I knew nothing about her or how she hunted. But i would like to know if someone has personal knowledge

Taking last strikes being cut back in to treed dogs is how dark won it.

And did it with a way different set of rules. The way UKC is set up and hunted 2 dogs would have covered the dog by the truck and everyone would have been leash locked walking to the other dog. A BIG part of it is your coon population as to what type of dog wins. Remember deep and alone 45 min into the hunt doesn't work. The dogs that win big get it done in 10 min. while the rest are still looking for a track.

Looks like to me we need a rule change then I have hunted under those other rules with a last strike dog $1,100 in 60 days won 10 out of 12 cast it takes that babble and blow deep out of the picture unless you are put in a place were there are no close coons and they done it on purpose.

Your not going to get a no leash lock rule in UKC, at least we can still cut if all dogs are not treed. Thats better than it used to be. Also Darks trees where being scored in 3 min instead of 5. That really changes the game.

change the tree rules to read like the strike rules.dont see how a dog A that babbles off the chain for 100 and an honest strike dog B for 75 and another C for 50 and the other D for25.B and C tree together with a coon and D trees a short ways in with a coon and the long ranger ambushes a coon a mile away and wins. the first dog to tree a coon should get 100 and the dog to tree a coon second 75 and so on.works like the strike points.no first coon unless all dogs are loose and competing.

Unless I'm wrong, after you score the dog close to the truck and start towards the dog treed over a mile away, after 10 minutes of walking you can call time out until you get to the tree, then start the time to shine that tree. I don't think you let the time run just to get to alone and deep.

Dogs should just strike and tree coons where they are, again, WHERE THEY ARE. Anything else is a waste.

JMO

Drop the leash lock rule, and keep re-casting from your tree if other dogs are treed or not.'Deep and Alone' type would disappear.

We have got to the point we are not happy with anything. Or at least anything is fair game to complain about. Over the years we have we have tried to breed harder hunting dogs. It has worked. You say a straight line hunter is not a hard hunting dog but a problem. I say your right but it is a byproduct not handled by the trainer of a hard hunting dog.
Just like Slick treeing is a byproduct of what we bred for in the treeing dog. Slick treeing is not considered good just like a straight line hunter is not considered good. But the owners decided to keep them and they do with with them.

Dogs thrown into deep swamps of thousands of acres, learn to hunt differently that dogs that learn to run the edge of the fields. Both have their place.

Not all hard hunting dogs are not straight line hunters. Not all hard tree dogs are not a slick tree'er.

I know I like them close and so do my legs. But to win in some of these places the judges take you. You better have a dog that rambles around.

I also don't like the leash lock rule and think it should go away. Problem is, as the hunting ground goes away it makes that rule hard to follow. Plus (don't mean to step on toes) the guide dropping you on feeder buckets and if all dogs stay together and then time out is called to go to another bucket. That would go away also. Nothing worse that the guide that drops you on a bucket and his dog trees on it, circle or plus. Your dog is out hunting and the guide comes up with the dog is getting on land it can't be on or comes up with some danger out there and time out is called. Just to visit another feeder bucket. If the 5 acres that the feeder bucket is on, is the only land you can hunt around there. Why did we turn out there to begin with.

you can't have close and multiple everytime. deep and lonely will just burn up your hunting time, I personally like one to hunt 4-600 yards with the coon, than over half a mile with one
