opinions, not sure i want to go there though lol

I have a nephew that my parents are raising but I'm very close with. He's 5 yrs old and I have shown him a few coon hunting videos on YouTube and he seems really into it. My first question is do you guys think he's to young to go with for a few drops once in a while? He's never done anything like this before but seems to really enjoy what I've shown him and says he wants to go. My 2nd question is does anyone have any experience with the Nite Lite lights? I'll need to get him a light to wear if he comes with and I've got a 2 yr old and 2 month old of my own so money is quite flowing like the Mississippi river, I know price wise they're pretty cheap and he doesn't need a great light unless I know it's something hes actually going to want to do. But are they even worth then $100 they cost just for a kid to wear? Or does anyone know of a better alternative besides those head lights Walmart sells, I want him to have something similar to mine so he feels more included. Thanks.

Kelley Lights makes a $100 dollar light that I bought my daughter and it works great and holds like a 50hr charge. Great light for the money.

Ok thank you. Who sells the Cree light? Or do I buy it right from Cree?

Look up Cree lights on Amazon.I bought one 3 years ago for $17 and it still works great. Its a small rechargeable headlight.I actually bought it for bow hunting but my grandson has claimed it for coonhunting ,he's about to turn 4 this month.Honestly this little light is as bright as my light ,just doesn't last near as long ,good for one night of hunting for sure.

Buy him one of the little cheap lights at first. He won't know the difference and he isn't going to stay out long enough to run it down. Don't get him a bright one as he is going to want to leave it on all of the time. When he gets older if he is still interested, you can make a big deal of getting him a "big boy" light. Be prepared if you are going to take him. They have a very short attention span. He will be as interested in picking up rocks and sticks as he is in the dogs. All he will really care about is being "included" with the "big guys".

A few tips.

Don't put a heavy cumbersome light on him. If it's heavy at all, eventually he'll be taking it off and not wanting to wear any light or deal with carrying a flash light. I've seen this happen several times with different kids. I'd go cheap as possible as long as it's rechargeable.
Don't wear him out, keep it fun. Keep him wanting to go. A 1/2 mile through the timber and back is pretty hard on 5 year old short legs, climbing over everything in his path (At age 10 it's lots easier). Take jerky, cookies and drinks. When he's 9 or 10 let him drive on the way home, late at night on the back roads (This is huge).
Play your cards right and he'll get hooked on the dog work later on. Then you can haul him around to the hunts when he's older and compete in the youth hunts. If he's still got a strong desire to be hunting with you on most weekends at age 10-16, then you are a winner.
Believe me you'll enjoy it as much as he does.

I almost forgot, watch out for briars. One briar thicket can ruin him for life.

Whatever You Do

Remember these things:

1. Get a cheap light. Like Richard said, it won't get shut off and double AA batteries are cheap.

2. Prepare to listen to non-stop talking and questions. This is good.

3. Never let him see the UKC message board. It has been the ruination of many a good coonhunter. Plus someone that young might actually believe everything they read on here.

Nite lite

I have two. I bought at different times. They were not a 100 dollars then. Bought them years ago for my Daughters. They have worked great. Still working. The neighbor kids use them along with my Kids still same batteries. I started my kids out on cheap lights for all the same reasons everybody else has listed. I made it fun for my Daughters before I really took them on a hunt. Cokes , Little Debbie's, little drinks called Bug juice. I didn't even know what they were talking about. We went into store they said I want Bug Juice. It was a Koolaid look alike in a small squirt bottle. My Dsughters laughed about them not long ago saying remember when we got those going Coon hunting. They are now 16 and 14. Time flys. It's not so much about the hunt as it is just going. Good Luck!

I have already been educated on the bug juice by him lol. I appreciate everyone's help and ideas on the topic. My nephew needs something in his life, for being 5 he's had a rough one already. Mom's a piece of work that cut her wrist Infront of him, his dad (my little brother unfortunately) care more about drugs than family and his other grandparents aren't in the picture. My parents do what they can but they're both over 60 so handling a 5 yrs old can be tough at times for them. I try to spend as much time as possible with him but I've got 2 kids under 3 myself. They aren't old enough to hunt with me so I was thinking it could be our thing for now. He is really into the idea and I'm excited to get him out there and see if he really enjoys it. I'm more worried about just getting some time with him and having fun in the mean time. Who knows, maybe, hopefully, in a few years I'll be getting him a dog.

Most seasons are closed-----

BUT, when you harvest them, make it a clean shot and have the hounds tied back. Remember these kids are under a different kind of schooling today and there's just different pressures that they face. Be sure to have a camera, got to keep the memories!!

Take him, you and he both will enjoy it. Instead of buying him a light you may want to look into buying one of the ballcaps with a light in them that a lot of turkey hunters use.
My oldest grandson just turned 6 in Jan and I've taken him three times. Just be sure to take snacks and drinks and make it fun. Owen carries a flashlight with him most of the time.
