Old Timey Walkers

What has happened to the old timey walker dogs? The ones I started out hunting with, the ones that would check themselves before locking to a tree, the ones that would bust through the dark and grab the tree with the meet up it. Walker hounds that have thick houndy looks as well as deep hound sounding mouths? Ive seen more in the past few years that are built like greyhounds and have yapping mouths that simply bust through the woods and grab the first tree with scent on it. Am I the only one that's noticed this?

I've seen 2 in my life and one is dead, the other is 10 or 11 years old. The 1st was the best bear dog my dad ever had when he still hunted. Big body, droopy face, longggg ears, big feet. She was a true walker dog. The other my cousin has and he's an outstanding coon and bear dog. Same ol timey appearance. Both dogs had a humongous deepppp bawl mouth on em. I'd like to have one for myself but you know how it goes. Everybody claims to have "old old old blood" walkers but they're not the ol timey walkers that I know.

That's a great looking hound josh! And I'm not trying to offend anyone's dog or anyone's breeding with this post, just curious who all still has a hound that fits this description. The 2 that stand out the most to me that I hunted with was a grandson of YR Champ and the other was a granddaughter of RB Flag.

These are not "ol timey" walkers, but they have huge mouths, they are accurate, and they look like hounds. Looks is not super important to me, but if they are not loud and accurate.....we wont keep them.

I have one, GR. Show Ch. GR. Nite Ch. current Texas State leader PKC Morgan's Nichols Creek Revelee. Cold nosed, Fast, Big Bawl mouthed, coon treer.

Posted by Bayemup34 on 11-28-2014 03:54 AM:

The old timey walkers I hunted with were the coldest nosed dogs I've ever seen. My dads gyp could strike a bear track that no other dog on the mountain could strike and she would always get it jumped and it would get treed. Now when you got that hot track and put other dogs with her they would all take off and leave her bcuz both of the old walkers I've seen we're slow track dogs. But what they lacked in speed they made up for in mouth and accuracy. My cousins is an extremely accurate coon dog. Dads was never much of a coon dog bcuz he never pushed her very hard coon huntin. But both had those deep bawl mouths that cut through the dark no matter how far away or how hard the wind was blowin. I've heard ol Rock from a mile away in strong winds locked down on a tree and could hear him pretty clearly. With the meat of course.
