Bloody stool
I have a three year old female that I have taken to the vet for bloody runny stools that stink a lot worse than normal. I give her meds (large white antibiotic pills) and it will clear up for 3-4 months and then it comes back. The vet said they get it from drinking stagnant water. Anyone ever have this problem? I can't believe that it's from water unless she is just not getting it out of her system because she has not been in a swamp this go round. Any damages long term? I trust this vet as he is nationally known. Any information would be appreciated.
stool
have you wormed her for hook and whipp worms.. use a good wormer and wait 10 days do it again.. that could be what it is.. also get tape worm med too..

Worm her good and do it again in 14 days.Finish the pills you got from the vet.
Change drinking water daily and add 2 cap fulls of Clorox to 5 gallons drinking water.

Dog is completely worm free. This is a bacterial infection that is recurring.
Antibiotics clears this up for weeks, then it comes back. It is definitely not coming from the drinking water. Clean water twice daily in a stainless steel bowl.
Try feeding her a few tablespoons of plain yogurt every day or giving her some pro biotic pills (you can get at walmart in the vitamin section) this will build up the good bacteria in her guts. It might help might not but if she was mine this is what I would do.
Also might be worth trying a corn & grain free dog food.

EXCELLENT for taking care of bacterial infections. Every time I see bloody stools, I know its time to put it in the drinking water. Just like magic it clears all the problems. Wouldn't run a kennel without it. Not expensive either.

It sounds to me like your dog suffers from Giardiasis
Parasitic Diarrhea (Giardiasis) in Dogs. Pronounced G-ARE-DE-UH
Giardiasis refers to an intestinal infection that is caused by the protozoan parasite giardia, which is the most common intestinal parasite that is found in humans. Dogs develop the infection by ingesting infectious offspring (cysts) that are shed in another animal's feces. The contamination can be from direct or indirect contact with the infected cysts. The organisms, once ingested, make their way into the intestine, often causing diarrhea. The treatment is typically performed on an outpatient basis with a good prognosis.
The condition or disease described in this medical article can affect both dogs and cats. If you would like to learn more about how this disease affects cats, please visit this page in the PetMD health library.
Symptoms and Types
Symptoms are more visible in younger animals than in older animals and can be either sudden (acute), temporary (transient), non-continuous (intermittent) , or ongoing (chronic) in nature. In some cases, dogs will exhibit diarrhea that is soft, frothy, greasy, and with a strong, awful odor or excessive mucus.
Causes:
One of the most common causes of the parasitic infection is the ingestion of infected fecal material, as the cysts are shed in animal feces. The most common cause of transmission is actually waterborne, as the parasite prefers the cool and moist environment. Up to 50 percent of young puppies will develop this intestinal infection, and up to 100 percent of dogs housed in kennels will develop it due to the massive exposure and closely shared living spaces.
Diagnosis:
Your vet will want to rule out other possibilities for the intestinal infection such as improper digestion (maldigestion), unabsorbed nutrients (malabsorption), or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) prior to recommending a treatment option.

Canned punkin. Look for it in the grocery isle where the pie cooking stuff is.
Pure, natural punkin. Nothing else in it but water. Give her a couple heaping spoonfuls several times a day.
I would put her up from hunting or atleast hunt her away from whereever shes drinking bad water for awhile to be sure thats whats causing it. If she clears up, then your vet is correct. If she doesnt then he can try something else. This isnt a game for her. Theres something wrong. If you think enough of her, you can stand not hunting her for a short while to help her get better.

And 1 more thing, (climbing on my soap box) do not put bleach of any kind in your dogs water for them to drink. I recommend using stainless steel water buckets and food bowls, I also recommend picking them up & rinsing them out after they are done eating. The water buckets should be cleaned and filled with fresh water daily. The only time I would use bleach/water would be to disinfect the buckets & bowls and would rinse them thoroughly, then air dry before next use.
Also, when traveling to a hunt, you should always take a bucket & water from home with you. Not all water is equal to water from home and water from a different source can irritate a dogs stomach just like a sudden change in dog food. Always take a water bottle to the woods with you to give your hound a drink and discourage drinking from a puddle, pond or any kind of standing water.
I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it's really not. If we cannot take 5 mins a day to at least insure our dogs have clean water/water buckets to drink from and a clean food bowl to eat from, then we are probably to busy to have dogs.
We, you & I have our dogs for our enjoyment, we restrain them either by chain or in a pen taking away their ability to provide for their self, therefore depending on us to provide them with the basic things needed for survival i.e. food & water. It is our responsibility to do just that the best we can.
You can also look at it like this, we ask our dogs to preform their best every time we take them to the woods, especially to a hunt. I would hate to think that I lost a hunt (in some cases a big money hunt or truck hunt) because I was to lazy to make sure he/she had plenty of clean water to drink, which caused him to have stomach problems/diarrhea which could cause him to become dehydrated and run out of energy to where he gets beat by only a few seconds to the tree by another dog who needed a 1st tree to win. If you lose a race by .5 seconds your still what ? That's right, a loser ! It could be very costly.
I will step down off of my soap box now and go back to work. I have 2 very good articles. 1 on "Hydration" & the other on "The Brain/Gut Connection" that I would gladly share if anyone would like to read them you can text me or pm me.
Take care,

You need metronidazole. It most likely is Giardia. You can also do a single dose of Marquis. This is get any single cell Protozoa. Remember you are dealing with a single cell "animal" not a worm. No wormer will get a single cell protozoa.
