Find a club near you or go with a friend to a hunt or two .Ask to be a spectator on a cast so you can see how things work . Get a rule book - STUDY IT ...KNOW YOUR DOG & jump in everyone has a first time . We have guys that ask for score cards so they can practice & do mock hunts while pleasure hunting to get the hang of it , most will be glad to help you out . (oh & when you go for real don't tell the 1's that you draw it's your first hunt most guys are great sportsmen but there are a few that are not)
Always know everybodies score & strike & tree your dog ...

know the rules, start at a local small club in an area where you know people and most of all, know your dog

Just hook up with a local club......I guarantee you will find some good guys that are willing to help.

Spectate on a cast or two...

You will have a basic enough understanding at that point.

ALWAYS be HONEST with other hunters & don't make excuses for a dog. Don't fall in love with the dogs you hunt!!! Admit the good & bad about your dog and you will enjoy the hunts more & surely make friends. If you say you get cheated in every cast or your dog is perfect, friends will be a lot harder to find. Its just a game, &you have to determine how lmportant it is to you. The more you prepare before the game, the more successful you'll be. Coon hunting is a lot of FUN, if you keep it that way. Welcome, Jr. Steelman
