Mooning a coon
Has any of you ever heard of it, and does it really work? I'm not talking about seeing a dark spot in the tree and shining your light, I'm talking about using the moon to find the coon.

Whew, that title had me a little nervous!
Can't say I have ever heard of that term before, but I have gone hunting several times when it was a full moon and you could see the coon clear as day without turning a light on. I remember the one night we found three in three different trees without a light.

A guy told me about it just a few minutes ago , I thought that he was talking about on a full moon night it was bright enough to see the dark spot of a coon in the tree and he said no. This is how he said do it. You position yourself to where the tree is between you and the moon. You move around to where the moon is on the back side of the limb you are searching and he said when the coon come between you and the moon the light would glow slightly and create a halo effect around a coon. I'm sure he is pulling my leg but he promised he was not lying and he ha found several that way. He said it is the easiest way to find a coon that you have already seen his eyes but can't get him to look again because at least you know where to start so you don't have to search the whole tree.

Use to hunt with a guy that was to tight to buy a light. he got to where he could see in the dark and would find the coon before me with leaves off about half the time.

The man is NOT pulling your leg!! I've found many coon in pine trees using the moon like he told you, and they do glow unless wet.

Yeah, thats how I start looking for a coon, I have not noticed a glow but have found large spots on a limb that when investigated turned out to be a coon stretched out on a limb.

I don't have good eyes for that thanks to being a welder! Haha I geuss you could though and I'm sure old timers did back befor they had bright box lights and stuff.

I do it about three or four times a year.Late in the season these old seasoned up cooons hide really good too, even these 3-400 dollar new lights can't find them. I learned how to use the moon when I started hunting with the carbide lights a couple days back.

Confused!
When I was a kid, we used to "moon" folks out the window of the car. I never much thought about mooning a coon until I ran into a fellow deep in a Florida swamp one night. He had a dog leash around his waist with fresh-skinned coon hides threaded on it and it looked for the world like a hula skirt on one of those Hawaiian girls only this guy wasn't that pretty. I asked him where he got those hides, noticing that he didn't have a gun or a dog. He said, “I mooned them.” I asked him to show me his technique and here’s what I saw.
This old boy slipped off down through the swamp until he saw a coon sitting in the tip top of a bell-bottomed cypress tree. He proceeded to drop his laundry and point his, well you get the picture, and that ole coon just rolled out of there and hit the ground like a sack of potatoes. It was amazing. I told him that was the dangedest thing I had ever seen and told him, “You must be the greatest coon hunter in the world.”
He said, “Naw, my wife’s much better at this than I am but I don’t let her hunt no more.” “Why not,” I asked? With my hand up he told me, “She just tears ‘em up too bad.”
