Dogs going nuts?

I'm hunting what I consider to be some nice, solid dogs this winter. I can usually drop them most anywhere, in most any conditions, and expect to tree a coon or legit den. Almost no junk, runaways or stupidity in general.

Last night these same dogs treed possums, blew out of the world, ran mystery junk, and overall acted stupid. Managed to tree a coon late, but there was more nonsense last night than I've had out of them in the last 2-3 months combined. Seems like I have a night or two like this every winter, and was wondering if anyone had an explanation..?
Barometric Pressure, moon phase, sub-standard dogpower???

We all have a couple nights a year just like that. I firmly believe the dogs do it on purpose so we appreciate them more on the good nights. LOL.

Id have to agree with you john.My best dog acts strange on a bright monnlight night. Not sure why.Guess shes thinkin its supposed to be dark.Cant wait till the rut kicks in.

Dogs are just like all of us. They have good nights and bad nights. They do smart things and dumb things. The important thing for me is that the good out weigh the bad.

Ive seen plenty of solid tree dogs do some crazy stuff under a full moon. But at the same time every dog has its bad days

Posted by Cory Highfill on 12-24-2012 01:06 PM:

That's what's aggravating, these dogs just don't have bad nights. Granted, they look better some nights than others, but in months and months of hard hunting they've barely made a bobble.
That said, when the wheels decided to come off, they came all the way off!

Barometer may have been off

LoL much rateher here something like this than a dog getting stolen or ran over could have been much worse

sounds like you had a good night it gets boring when things
get perfect

dogs

i think dogs are like us sometimes they act dumb as a box of rocks but aalso the boa coon are running cause they are in rut and its been bright like last nuight the coon we did tree my buddy thought they were running trash but i dont think they were they did blow out and struke off of the leash and went a ways but they treed and they had the coon so i think the boas are just runn9ng think about it in the spring and early summer a sow will run like a cat cause shes getting the hounds away from her kittens i dont know but that my opinion

Cory dogs are not perfect and they are just dogs,if they were anything else they would be feeding us.Everybody that has replied bring up some very good points. My young dog is pretty consistent and lately being doing an awesome job in this cold weather.I went with friends last night and I was pretty cocky hed get hooked a couple of times with the meat well boy I was wrong. He did make a den with another dog but the rest of the night he was pretty crazy, didnt make no slicks though lol.Seems like they will make a fool of you everytime no matter how good they are. They'll be nights like that, dont worry about it.Keep huntin and merry christmas.

Every hunter that runs hounds any time at all goes through this. The best advice taht I can give you is to avoid hunting on the extreme nights. (colder than usual, fresh snow fall, freshly frozen ground, and so on) When dogs have a really hard time just finding a track, they will find ways to entertain theirselves. Whether it be running a deer, treeing a possum, or just playing. some times, coons just will not move for days at a time. Dogs are no different than us, if they get bored, they will find something to get into.

dogs

cory i agree with lonnie dogs will be dogs the other night it was bright and the hounds ran a track all night i believe it was a boa coon cause they went in circles and never did leave the area but the mountain coon ran alot different than bottoms coons and again it kinda makes me think that it might have been a cat

I've decided to hunt 'em till they hurt and carry a big stick. If they're gonna be dumb, they're gonna have to be tough.
I know exactly what they're doing, just never understood why they started pulling crap like they sometimes do. I've bought, sold, and hunted dogs all over the country for the better part of the last 20 years, and seen straight dogs get junky, angels get mean, hustlers get lazy, and accurate dogs miss.
I've made excuses for them too... Running boars, too cold, too hot, too dark, too bright, etc...
A month ago, these were alot better dogs than most people are packing, better than most I've had. Don't understand what clicks or comes apart between their ears, but I think I'll just shock, whip, and hunt the stupid out of them!
