Ive been lurking a long time...but now need some advice please.
I have total respect for you coon hunters and read your threads about daily. You's have taught me about what to use for fleas, flies, ticks...etc. Worming, heartworm the list goes on....so I thought why not ask the pro's here about this pup:::
I have a pup that had some sort of zits on his neck when I got him at 3 1/2 months old. (I believe from his collar?)
I started putting woman's hoochie cream on it per advice from a friend and they went away after about a week to 10 days. Now seems anytime he rubs his face on anything when having and itch...they pop out again. This time its near his eye between the lid and tear duct. He was scratching it the other day cuz Im darn tired of him chewing up stuff when I turn my back, so I put a muzzle on him for about an hour. He kept rubbing the side of his face with his forearm and a few days later, again here are those little puss filled zits.
Any suggests on what to use near his eyes? I know if I take him to the vet their gonna send me home with a bunch of meds that probably wont work or will have tons of steroids in them and say he has an allergy. When Im thinking its more of a yeast infection or bacterial infection ? I could be very wrong!!
Any suggestions on what to use to try to clean this up once and for all???
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Do a google search for puppy strangles......
That is most likely what your pup has.

Go to the drug store and get a bottle of Betadine.
I think i spelled that right.Put on a pair o rubber gloves
it will stain your hands.Put on the area afected rub it in real good
I just watched a video on puppy strangles and his symptoms are nothing like that. He gets a few zits, they have smell to them like B.O when popped, no lumps, no sore joints, no lesions around his testicals or rectum. No lymph node or glad swelling either. It makes me think some sort of infection because of the smell of these zits when popped. Plus when I got him , then ones on his neck reacted to treatment of Monistat for women
Ive seen the symptoms before. A few years back when I brought a horse sight unseen and within 5 days she had the strangles. What a royal pain that was to get rid of. I had to treat all 4 of my horse and it was very expensive.

Check out a illness called pemphigus.. This is just a shot in the dark for ya, but I had a chocolate lab here a while back that got it.. She was only about a year old.. Went to the vet and he had given her some steroids for it.. Probably not what your pup has but thought I'd throw it out there.

Sounds to me like a STAPH (bacterial) infection; not uncommon in puppies. See your vet - he will need medication (antibiotics) in order to get rid of it for good. Otherwise, stress can & will bring on repeat episodes of the infection.
When I worked for the vet, we often saw cases of puppy Staph infections, especially in certain breeds of dogs. Some cases can be very difficult to eradicate, once they are established.
The woman's cream that you used was probably an anti-fungal, for yeast infections. That's why it didn't permanently get rid of the problem...
Good Luck; let us know what happens !!
The vet can have you took the dog to one ?
Coonhunter: No I havent taken him to a vet as he's now 7 months old (first time it started he was 3 1/2 months) and the problem was gone until a few days ago after I put the muzzle on him and he kept rubbing his head to get it off and the zits appeared again riday. My vet wont be back until this Thursday cuz of the holiday.

A bottle of bedadine is @$16.00.
One more thing
Could be a lot of things but by chance was his collar and muzzle the dayglo material? Some dogs react bad to that material, try a leather or nylon collar.. Just thought I'd ask. My buddies dog would get infections from those plastic collars to the point the hair would even come off on his neck and get blisters etc.

Whether it's bacterial or fungal, you can go to the drug store and get Phisoderm or Phisohex (they are just different brands) - it's a scrub for acne, and contains several different ingredients - and it will clear it right up.
Laurie
A lot of pups get this. Even full grown dogs do (most of the time on the front elbows). It is generally caused by wooden dog houses or damp bedding. Bacteria grows in the wood or bedding. It is a skin infection caused by fungi or bacteria. Cephalexin will have it cleared up within a week or so. Athlete's foot cream or spray works too, but takes longer to clear it up.

@ Hazel he's spoiled just a tad and sleeps in the house on my bed. He doesnt go outside much as he's a fair weather pup and its cold up here in Michigan right now. Im lucky for him to stay out 10 minutes before he's screaming to come in.
@Laurie I will try that ...as with this being near his eye Im afraid if I put anything topical on it like an ointment , he'll rub it right into his eyes.
@Doug his collar he had on when he came, was nylon and I took it right off him and he only wears a choke when he's outside to potty then it comes right back off. The muzzle is that same nylon tho... so you might be onto something there. Hmmm
Ive left a message for my vet that Im ordering Keflex from amazon and to please call me with his thoughts. I wont give it to him until I speak to him or take the pup in, but I need to keep some around here for the livestock, so might as well get it now just in case.
Thank you everyone for your help ....you'all have been great and very informative. I'll keep you posted on his progress and I sure hope to get rid of what ever is causing this, soon.
