Toe nails
Does anybody have a good way to keep a dogs toe nails short? I know the obvious answer is to trim them, but I didnt know if anybody had a way to keep them back and prevent them from growing so fast.

dremmel them some dogs just grow extremely fast and you will have no choice but to grind them more often... but you can get them back way farther. You can go to the tools dept at walmart/kmart and get 1 that is bat. operated for about $20.

Then just stop when you hit the quick? That would give it a more rounded point to it too instead of being jagged when you cut them.

the dremmel is GREAT - get one. I too got a cordless for about $20 - normally run it on the low setting. round it back and forth across the tip and they will stay pretty well.
concrete runs help too - can't wait to get mine.

Do you guys not know the damage of running HIGH speed tools on a dogs toenails. Wow. How hard is it to keep the toenails trimmed.
Not that hard. 1 time every two weeks.
Come on guys. Our dogs are our buddies. They work hard to please us..Let's take the best care we can for them.

Toe nails
Kennel them on concrete it will naturally wear them down. If you have off the ground kennel pour a small pad with a kennel run and rotate through the line up.

PediPaws or Peticure Yes. Dremmel No.
I'm finishing up my degree to become a Vet. I know what is safe and what isn't.
I'm not telling you guys not to use it, but their is a lot of dangerous things could happen.
What happens if you get a bur on the sanding wheel and it grabs hold of the nail..Well, I think it will just rip it out. Then you got a Vet bill for Antibiotics, suturing the skin closed, etc.
Here is the main problem that I see using the dremmel instead of clippers.
The dremmel vibrates the toe nail. Causing it to be weak at the base and allowing it to break off easy and rip out if it gets caught in something.
I would just say use at your own risk.
best of luck to everyone.
Happy and safe hunting.

Most vets I have been around use.........YEP.......a dremmel.......vets are being trained to care fo a dog in the way to make the most money these days. I'll bet a person would be surprised how many people cut into the quick and run the dog to the vet. becouse of the blood.

I have a Pedipaw for my hounds, but it was good for about 2 trimmings on tough nails before it quit working. I'd say it will work fine for a smaller dog, but on my big dogs/dogs with really thick nails it just bogs down. I'm not really comfortable using a Dremmel, but it really does work the best. Here's a link for an affordable (yes, "Dremmel" brand) nail grinder from a grooming supply site that I buy a lot from. They have several other less expensive models as well. Even my "problem" dogs when it comes to nail trimming seem to behave better for a grinder.

I haven't checked into a price yet, but something else I've seen advertised at the vet is nail cauterizing. This is supposed to be really helpful for dogs that have long quicks, and I've considered doing it on one of my blueticks that will grow talons in no time....

We ended up buying one of those pedipaws and it does a pretty good job, dogs dont quite know what to think about it. We also made appointments for the vet to get them cauterized, its next thursday. I will let you all know how it goes.
