Thyroid issues in newborn puppies?
Does anyone know anything about this in newborn puppies? I have one puppy that is going to be two weeks old on Tues. he has not grown and hes been hard to keep weight on and in the last few days its been worse...hes grown weak and getting skinny and dehydrated quick, I have been watching him on his mom not sure if hes getting enough milk and also feeding him by a syringe, nothing seems to help, now today he has a lump not hard but also not liquid, his feet and pads havent developed at all he literally looks like he did the day he was born and his littermates are opening their eyes. Any info would be great!!!

Megan, check the roof of the pups mouth to see if it's deformed or has a channel in it. That will not allow the pup to nurse right and get too much air in stomach. Just a thought.

the lump is on the left side under his ear near by his jawline.
Thank you Alan I checked that and other than being less than half the size of the other pups it looks normal... :/

Stayed up with him all night. Put him on a nipple every hour or so. Still pretty weak, but a little better. Still dehydrated...

Good luck girl. Hope and prayers are with you on that litter.
Don't think it would be thyriod. I would guess internal as others have. Rose has thyroid probs and she was fine with the eating and drinking.
The lump sounds like in his gland. Is he breathing normally? Infection causes that lymp node to swell.
Amoxillin in liquid form. Not sure of the dosage I can check tho. Millie was on it when she was 1 day old because of her stomach tear.

Megan A few years ago we had a litter with a puppy just like this. When the pups were born there was one pup a little smaller than the rest but it is not uncommon to have a runt. When the pups were about 2 weeks old I noticed he was not growing as much as the others. I thought since he was the runt maybe he just was not getting enough to eat. This was a litter of 9 and I thought he was not strong or big enough to get his fair share. So I started to bottle feed him 2 times a day. I called him Peanut. After a week of bottle feeding I could not see much difference. We take all of our puppies to the vet when they are 3 weeks old so I thought the vet might find a problem. He said he could find nothing wrong...that he was just a runt. I kept bottle feeding as much as I could and tried to feed dog food also. He would eat but not much. He was so weak he could barely walk at times but when I went out to that kennel he would come out of the doghouse just like all the other pups. He looked so weird compared to the other puppies....like a minaiture Black and Tan. When he was 6 weeks old he seemed to be getting weaker. I took him back to the vet and he said he was dehydrated. He gave him fluids and I took him home. I kept him in the house that night. During the night he started to have seizures. This pup had never shown any signs of affection...no licking on the face or playing. After every seizure that night he would spend a few seconds licking my face..broke my heart. The next morning we took Peanut to the vet to have him put down. Hardest thing I ever did. But I gave Peanut every chance...I think he was born with some problem that the vet could not find. Thank you again everyone for the replies, I have put some antibiotic in his milk, I am hoping for the best just doesnt seem like hes getting any better so hoping for a change now but time will tell, puppies this young are hard to diagnose, the vet just requests IV, Mrs. Pennington I do believe that there is something wrong here and its not malnuritioment, that story was sad
seems the puppy was thanking you for all your care and ambition to save its life, Im hoping it isnt the case here I hope that its just needing what we have given but we have been doing it for almost a week and it just seems like we are prolonging it.
will be keeping you posted, between me, krystal and my mom we have been giving him all we can and constant care.

IT SOUNDS LIKE HE'S GOT SOME KIND OF INFECTION IN HIS SYSTEM, AND THAT KNOT IS LIKE AN ABCESS TRYING TO LET THE INFECTION OUT. WE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO A PUP LAST YEAR. WE DID EVERYTHING WE COULD BUT IT ENDED UP PASSING.
