Skunk Problem...HELP!

How do you dispose of a skunk in your live trap? I can't shoot it, I ain't a gonna sweet talk it out and the wildlife trapper wasn't home. I had 2 this morning out of a sweet corn patch. I went to cover them with the blankets and the small one sprayed the blanket the instant it went over it. The big one didn't spray. I ended up taking them for a swim in a deep creek. Anyone have any other ideas? They can't be turned back loose, so I have very few options.

Help please?!?

that blanket over the trap .turn your car on and put the trap under the tail pipe with the blanket wrapped around.

my uncle "borrowed" one of my live traps to catch a few skunks with and when he brought it back it was full of bullet holes...LOL....so I don't think he has any suggestions for you!

Joey, that would work except it would burn the blanket.

I let them swim under water for about 10 minutes. You know, they don't swim well under water! Sounds cruel I know, but I had no other choice. PA GC says dispatch at sight of trapping. Couldn't do that because it was a populated area and I had no gun (stinky too). So swimming it was. I just thought maybe someone would have a better idea.

I used a high power air rifle. You don't have to get close enough to get sprayed and it won't destroy your trap.

Accatone and a syringe atached to a piece of pvc pipe or long wooden dowl.

We always backed the truck up close as we dared, put a blanket over the trap, slid a garden hose in the tail pipe and duct taped it and slid the other end under the blanket. Takes about ten minutes and you dont have to move the trap.

Now that might work. Hmmmm....hoping there isn't another one in the morning! 2 for the year would be fine by me!!!!!

they shouldn't spray when you put the blanket on as long as you take your time. If you go real slow they usually won't spray, don't just throw the blanket on. Also if shot in the lungs they don't spray.

Blanket

The first time I shot one in the trap. Coons would not go in that trap for months, even though I washed it several times.
I've used a blanket, real slow and then move them to new territory 15 miles away. Need two people to handle the blanket and be vey slow and calm about it.
Also I've just let them out, real slow movements, ease the door open, prop it open and leave, come back in a couple hours and they are gone.
All this so they don't spray my trap.

Also I have since learned how to neutralize the skunk odor. Mixing baking soda, peroxide and dish soap together. Google those 3 ingredients with skunk and you can get the exact
amount of each to mix. Works great on dogs, collars, dog box etc..
I don't clean up the dogs anymore, I make em wear it off.

i have done this a hundred times. take a small tarp and cut a hole for the handle of your trap. holed the tarp in front of you and place it all the way over the trap. tie a rope to the handle and toss in the water for 1 min if you want the skunk to live or as long as you want if you dont care and then release. you can load it right in the back of your truck and folled the tarp uner trap so it dose not blow off and take him to water he should not spray. i have done this alot and works great each time.

Me neither. If I'm close to water I'll make them go for a swim. When it's still fresh that will get a lot of it off. If I'm not close to water I just take them home and put them in their pens and then my wife says, "Got into another skunk tonight, huh?"

As far as shooting them in the lungs, I don't know. But if you go real slow, you can put the muzzle of a gun within an inch of the base of their head and pull the trigger. The skunk dies and nothing stinks.

Shot in the head

I stuck the barrel in the trap, the Skunk came up and smelled the barrel, I pulled the trigger. Shot in the head for sure. He sprayed for 30 seconds spining around in circles, when he ran out of spray, he died. Probably depends what their last thought was, I don't know.

I do Trapping for my county here in ohio( im alowed and required to euthnizie them here ) i keep the 22 componeys happy .. I run into this ALOT best advice i can give you is instead of a blanket use a cardboard box cut it to the lenght of your trap with a hole for your handle. WALK to the trap with the skunk facing you sing or whistle at it more you keep its attion the less chance of it getting spooked. if you are calm they are calm. your excited then well we all know what happens then....

if you do get sprayed its easy to get ride of that smell take a shower in liquid fabric softner might have to wash twice but it it the best way i found to get the smell off you and back in bed with other half

your local carrie out will have adult beverage boxes just cut the one side make a nice flap i keep 2 on hand at all times

good luck
