How Do You Teach A Dog To Go Over Fences?

I have never taught one and all mine have learned it, even the ones that ended up on the rock pile. They just seem to figure it out eventually.
My buddy just drags them over till they learn to climb but I don't like them to climb. They seem to get hung more often if they climb. About all of mine learned to mule jump over and I have never had one hung.

Well if the Hole where the Coon went thru is too Small !!!

We don't have any woven wire fence here like they to in Ohio and Indiana. I was think of going hunting out that way. I have seen dogs have problems with the fences and wanted to head off the problem.

Well if you don't have hog fence where you hunt, you might for sure run into a problem hunting out here. Not sure how to train for it tho.

Yep the Boy has grown abit in the last 3 months !!! He's just topping the 100# mark...

I've had 2 yots Bite the Dust cuz of our Hog Wire Fences.. They just Panic and screw up !!!

I do like Jim around here they just seem to figure it out after while. I like mine to climb because sooner or later they come across a new fence that is tight to the ground and over is the ONLY way.

Here is something you can do if want to teach em before you get to fence country. You dog must be in a kennel for it to work.

Get a section of 4in woven wire fence string across the kennel between the dog house and feed/water bowl.
At first keep the fence low enough so the dog can just barely step over. After a few days gradually raise the fence so he must begin jumping/climbing. To speed the process work with em with a treat at first to encourage them to come across. String the fence tight as possible, as it's easier for them to climb a tight fence than a loose fence. Before you know it they'll be going across like its not even there.

I've found what Chris suggested to work quite well actually. In these parts it's a plus to have a dog that fences well. Or should I say "a problem if they don't"?

Don't teach them

They will go under the fence were the coons go under at. It makes me nerves when I see a dog jumps a fence. They can miss judge the distance.

Three problems with a dog going under a fence. Take this from someone who has spent most of his life hunting around 4in woven wire fences.

1) I don't want mine to waste time looking for some place to go under.
2) Sooner or later they will get that collar hung up going under. 3) Sooner or later they will come to a fence tight as a banjo string and not be able to squeeze under.

I live around 4 string and 5 string fences around here in Oklahoma, and with 4 prong wire. I have seen dogs try to jump over and be gutted by the wire. Seen eyes cut and they lose the eye. All because they misjuged the distance. I would regular see a dog go under the fence.
