Erratic Heat Cycles

Is this common? My female has had fairly normal heat cycles until now....she's late. I know I haven't missed it because I check her every day. I almost feel like it's to spite me....LoL!! Now that I want to breed her, she won't come in heat!

Just wondering if this was a common problem or if I need to have her checked out.

what dog food are using

Purina Beneful at the moment. I tried Purina ONE but she absolutely will not eat it. She won't eat Diamond, either. Which leads me to another question....if there's a dog food I REALLY want them to eat, but they don't want to eat it, what is the BEST thing for me to do? I know can't keep switching dog foods around because I know that's not healthy either.

Also....since you asked that....what kind of food would you suggest?

Have you tried Purina One lately? I tried it a couple of years ago and my hounds didn't like it so I didn't continue feeding it at that time. A month or so ago I went back to it and mine dug into it like they were getting a treat and have continued to eat it. They love the stuff now. I figured Purina had done something to make it more appetizing. I'm not sure. I have found that giving a picky eater a Pet Tab Plus every day will help with their appetite.

Yes, I tried Purina One before I tried the Beneful. I just got a small bag of Beneful, but she don't like it either. I figured if she wouldn't eat the One, I'd at least try to give her something that she might eat until I can find a better food for her. I was just trying around. I don't like to feel like I'm starving her, though, even though she's in good condition. It bothers me if she doesn't eat. My male eats anything, cheap or expensive. I could probably give him a bowl of vegetables only and he'd eat it. But she is very picky.

The thing is....when we were in a financial crisis not too long ago and my Dad was the only one working....I had to settle for Kibbles N' Bits. They both eat that and love it, but now that I have found a pretty good job and all I really have to pay for right now is my dogs and my gas for my car, I want to get them on a good diet....especially her, particularly because when she comes into heat, she will be bred this time around. I've already picked the stud dog and talked to the owner, err....one of the owners, and first signs of heat she's to be scheduled in. And I will be keeping a puppy out of the litter, so I want everything right.

I'm about to head to the feed n' seed store to check out what all they have. Probably mostly Diamond. I might could get her to eat Diamond, I just never have had much luck with other dogs eating it. I guess I always got a picky one out of the bunch.

Some dogs are just naturally picky eaters. Not much you can do except what you are doing...try to find something good that they like. I learned to accept the pickiness with my Old Rock dog. Some days he would eat ok and others he wouldn't, but he always stayed in good shape on what he DID EAT....not too much rib and backbone showing. He lived to be almost thirteen eating that way, so I guess it was ok.

I just bought a 40lb. bag of Sport Mix Premium and gave her a sample bag of it first. She was eating it until my Dad started cutting grass near her and she went as far away from the lawnmower as possible. Always something....LOL!! All I can say is she's gonna have to learn to like the dog food that's better for her.

And she better learn not to be too picky when the fireants get bad. I've already started to see some mounds popping up.

I may be wrong but probably not. Feed her what ever you like, any good feed. Kibbles and Bits is a good food also, not the best but good.Put it down for her and five minutes later take it up. You can do this once or twice a day, however you normally feed. She will not starve and will eat. Don't feed scraps or anything other than the dog food. Most dogs that are picky eaters like that are getting all they WANT and need.

I agree with Bill. I don't feed my hounds anything but dog food. I feed a good dog food and do not supplement it with anything. I give them a milkbone each morning just as a treat for them. . I feed twice a day. Mine will eat their food in five minutes. If they happen to leave any I remove it immediatly.

a dogs condition some times dictates when or if they come in heat
i have a female that usualy stays very fit but to get her to cycle you have to take weight off her

Of all the dogs I've had, I've never come across a picky eater..several I've had would start choking on the first mouthfulls of feed they dive in so fast. A picky eating dog sure seems weird to me..I know they exist but dang I've never seen one.

Seeing theres a subject for this already, My female witch is just over 10 months has been spotting for a week and half and now is bleeding now, when is it too long, and should i take her the vet, this is one subject That I have no Idea, she had alittle something around 6 months but this time its dripping now, Should I be concerned.

Our 8 yr. old female has always run on a 9-11 mos. cycle. She use to be ready to breed about 7 days into a cycle. This last time she wouldn't stand till her 14th day and excepted the male clear up to the 19th day. I hope and pray she got bred in time. Last year I bred her on her 12th and 14th day and she didn't have pups. I think it was too early. I have never had a female cycle every 6 mos., never. I'm just use to it. These bitches are just that, evil bitches, learn to expect the unexpected!
