I like a coon dog of either sex, but I mostly prefer to put my time into females. If you have a top female, you can breed her to any stud you want. If you have a top male, you don't have as much choice in getting pups out of him, unless you have your own top female.

Females seem to be more all business in the woods. My female can have a coon treed before the males get done wetting on bushes and smelling each other.

Females are also less likely to be ill.

What Sex

The male hound is my preference to hunt.

I have trained several top hounds of both sexes. Can't say one is better than the other on treeing coon.

If you ever get a good male that don't think about the girls, doing spin outs around the truck, one that can be hunted with all the alligators and stay out of trouble and a top coondog, then I don't know why you would ever want to put up with a female unless you want to raise pups.

Most never realize the value of a female coonhound.

less playing

females tend to play less, and are better to train pups with, they are not as fussy at the tree, and my female is a great kill dog, just as good as any male...mike

I VOTED MALE BUT IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO ME. ILL HUNT EITHER ONE. FEMALES DO HAVE THEIR PROBLEMS. SUCH AS COMING INTO HEAT. I DONT KEEP BUT AT THE MOST 2-3 HOUNDS. I CANT THEM THE TIME THEY DESERVE. RIGHT NOW IM WORKING A 2 YR. OLD AND HE IS ALL I CAN HANDLE.

Posted by wayne on 08-18-2003 10:33 PM:

i prefer females they tend to keep there mind on hunting i don't think coming in heat for a short while is as much as a problem with some males that are always in heat

Wow! I had no idea.
I'm really surprised at how many people are picking females.
I'd take a good male over an equally good female any day.
Maybe it's harder to get a good male?
After you've finally had one I don't see how you'd ever prefer females.

I picked females simply because I have owned 4 coondogs. 2 males and 2 females. Both females were far better hounds than the 2 males. I am down to 2 dogs now (not counting my beagles...both male), 1 of each and she is a lot better and more pleasurable to hunt than my hard headed come when he wants to finally got him to quit trying to hump everything in sight male is.

My wife prefers me to hunt females just because at least once a year she knows for certain I'll be home every night for nearly a month. LOL
