Amy i have been feeding next level 40.00 for 32 oz
useless stuff just breed them right.

I wont say that its useless, not from all the reading on it ive done. Its suppose to be a great support for joints and can help a dog that is older and has joint pain.

My old dog

My old dog gets Glucosomine with DMSO fairly regular . I think it helps her a little bit but the best thing I've found to relieve her arthritis pain is Meloxicam (sp?)
Packaged and sold for dogs as "Metacam" it is a Non Steriodal Anti Inflammatory (NSAID) perscribed for arthritis pain . This stuff works !! I don't give it to her daily but I use it when her symptoms are at their worst and it's amazing how much better she moves around and feels when she's had some . It is a controlled medication that requires a prescripton but this stuff is good and I thank Dr. Susan Loyd (Long Ears) for telling me about it a couple years ago .

Jeff... did you know there is now a Human Generic Pill form of this??? It is SO CHEAP! $4.00 at Walmart for 30 7.5mg pills. We split them in half for our 85 lb greyhound and give him pecid AC to prevent stomach upset. The liquid Metacam was 70 or 80 or 90? $ a BIG Bottle... and lasted a bit more than 1 mos... this stuff is 4$ for TWO MOS! WooHoo! Allan Hallada on this site told me about the generic form. Our greyhound as been on metacam for Yrs! Glucosamine did NOT help him in any form.

We used glucosamine in Horses here. It works for some and not others. (Just like humans). We had a couple react Badly to it and get fluid in there joints. Before my brain injury I did racehorse rehab here. We did a veterinary study for some feed companies here on different supplements....it was very interesting and...I forget most of it! LOL... I know there are certain supplements that Will Work if they are given with the proper diet. If I recall Biotin for horse hooves worked best with flax seed- and it was best if it was fresh and ground just before feeding as the oils begin to break down quickly and can harm the nutrients..... I can't recall if it had any effect with the Glucosamine?
Glucosamine has Never touched my joints... I have freinds who swear by it and it does nothing for me.

I also agree with whoever said to breed right... in the horse world the overly straight or bent joints in the horses bred to "look" a certain way created great unsoundnesses in the horses.... I am afraid the same will occur in the coonhound. The overly straight hind ends are not built to do what a coonhound should be able to do. Be sure you continue to breed for Soundness of body and mind...
Also though, as we have our dogs live longer and longer we have more old joints to deal with even in sound individuals. My greyhounds problems are 100% from running injuries. His build would have kept him sound and healthy much longer... Our BnT who is almost 3 I think... has joint issues already from his build(not breeding but malnutrition as a pup)...I agonize over what his old age will be....
Sorry, I went on a rant....LOL.... Good luck with your hounds everyone, HappyHunting! Heather

Bad cases of arthritis I use Deramaxx or Rimadyl. Costly but very affective, wonder drug.

Does anyone know of a over the counter human drug thats as good?

One of my old guys was nearly eighteen when he left us. He was on Metacam and glucosamine/chondroitin daily. It sure helped him. Right now I have hubby and five terriers on glucosamine. All of them doing well.

Vioxx was darn good, but that was prescription only and not available any more.

Lee

The Metacam is costly also but is just as effective with possibly fewer side effects or dangers than the Rimadyl. Just as effective as the Deramaxx. Susan had told me about both the deramax and the Metacam a couple years ago and I looked into them and opted for the Metacam.

I have actually found a women at work who's mother keeps a prescription of Meloxicam.(same thing in human pill form ) The one that Heather spoke of that is so cheap in the pill form. She shares them with me as she doesn't take them regularly . I think hers are 20 mg and I split them in half and only give Kate a half one every other day or so when she's hurting the worst. It is unbelievable what a difference they make . My Vet says I need to do regular Liver panels on her but at 12 years old I can't really see doing it . The old girl is still eating and doing pretty good otherwise and I just want to make her last couple years a little more comfortable for her .

Merry Christmas to all of you and your families .

You too Tan !! :

Amy,

I give our 13 yr. old sheltie glucosamine/chondroitin pills every day. It seems to really help her, it keeps the swelling down around her joints, and I can tell when I forget to give it to her.

Posted by Laurie Soutar on 12-22-2007 04:52 AM:

I've used Glucosamine for quite a few years for old dogs, and found it really does help. The most economical way to buy it is a product called GLU-3000, it's a 3 pound tub of powder, and packaged for horses. I get my vet to order it in, and it works out to less than $3/month per dog. I start them on it when they're about 8 years old, and they stay on it the rest of their lives. It is not a pain killer, nor an anti-inflammatory - it works by improving the synovial fluid in the joints, which tends to increase mobility and reduce pain and inflammation that way. You can't give one dose and see improvement - you need to keep them on it at least a couple of weeks before you see improvement. If the problems are not in the joints, it's not going to help.
Glucosamine is most effective at preventing old-age deterioration of joints, so it works best if you start before you have problems, or when they are just starting.
MSM seems to work best at preventing further deterioration of old injuries.
Meloxicam (Metacam) is one of the safest NSAIDS, and can either be used daily for severe or very painful problems, or just as needed. If you find the need to use it occasionally, it would probably benefit the dog to be on glucosamine regularly. The human and veterinary versions are interchangable, but the human is MUCH cheaper.
Rimadyl's manufacturer recommends doing a liver screen prior to using the drug, and monitoring liver function while the dog is on it. As someone else pointed out, there are much safer alternatives.
Two good over-the-counter medications for pain and inflammation are naproxen sodium - available as Aleve, and ketoprofen, available as Orudis.

home remedey try a teaspoon of unflavored gelitin on their food every day takes about a week to see it working but it helps produce the liquid that lubricates the joints releives some of the stiffness and is alot cheaper then the drugs
