Another one of those things to ponder......

Everyday it seems there is a thread on here discussing how sorry todays dogs are compared to the hounds of the past. Slick treeing seems to be by far the biggest issue closely followed by the lack of tracking ability. Then over independence, won't hunt together, always treed in the next section. It appears most that post here agree with this. Todays dogs just don't stack up.
All this leaves me wondering or pondering whether most on here are hunting dogs that don't stack up or is it just everyone else that is packing junk? That is the question.

My home club, Wyatt Coon Club, is hosting it's first UKC hunt tommarrow night (Friday). Looking forward to heading over there, visiting with old friends and prolly guide a cast. Always enjoy the new crop of stemwinders. Usually a few really nice ones in the crowd.

Well Jim I'm going to go out on a limb here and say most will say the other guy is hunting junk.I can't think of anyone who would admit their own dog is junk

I haven't ever made the transition from the old to the new. I ain't really in a long time played in the big showes but I have no problem winning with these old style hounds when I do go. Buuuuuuuut I will say this I prepare a dog for several months before I go to a hunt. Old habit I guess because back in the day it was months between big hunts and there was large numbers your stuff had to be right for you to place. Nowadays these dogs are in 3 or 4 hunts a week maybe they are not prepared correctly to win.

Is it most of the posters or just the couple that write most of the posts that feel that way.

Good question........

I don't know who , we or they is and it sure ain't me I just got a mediocre mutt. But I know several in Oklahoma and Missouri that when they go up north they get their picture taken even win or place in world championships. But I think it's because they are selective and prepare to win.

I have had to admit it many times!

Plenty of people don't know they're hunting junk because they never hunted with a top dog. If Phillis Diller is the prettiest woman you ever saw, you wouldn't be a very good beauty contest judge.

The biggest problems is 90 percent of people think their dog is better then what it is and the longer one has been dead the better they become. I know in my part of the country it takes a coondog to do any real winning. You see the babblers and slick treeers ect too but for the most part they aren't doing any of the winning.

I used to drive a concrete delivery mixer. We drivers had a saying......
"You're only as good as your last pour".......change "pour" to dog ! Anything other than current r just memories and we all have them.

Jim

Hope you have a good hunt turnout and see some good dog work. I for one, just don't see the gloom and doom that some wants us to think. Dave

I am always packing junk. If people were honest with themselves they would realize they are too.
