Dog trees then back tracks
I have a dog about 2 1/2 years old. He will run and tree with others and by himself on a hot coon. PROBLEM I’m having is hell tree for a couple seconds then get back on the trail go about 20 yards then come back and tree a little more. So In other words he just keeps leaving the tree and sniffing the track then coming back but won’t stay. He does this with his others and by himself.
The dog will bark his head off and get all foamy mouthed over a caged coon.
He also trees like he should if I take a hide and lay a drag for him.
So I do not see why he LEAVES THE TREE AND WONT TREE LIKE HE SHOULD.
I really like the dog and hate to give up on him. He’s just driving me nuts.
Any help or Suggestions is much appreciated? Thanks
My first recommendations would be not to hunt young dogs with him. The young hounds may be tested on staying treed. Personally i would start over but do understand the part of not wanting to move him. I would give him a shock treatment followed by a tone. Put him back on the tree & show him the coon. May have to do this a few times but use the tone first after the first treatment. If he doesn't go back shock him and put him on the tree. He should get to where the tone puts him on the tree. Later on a tone should put him on the tree if your not close to him. Good luck.

I don't believe your dog will make a pressure treedog and that's a must for me to feed one.

Ok, first thing. Like pastor mike said, stop showing the dog coons and hides. he is already way past needing visual stimulation. The best way that I gave found to tighten a young dog up on the tree is to tie him back about 30 feet from the tree and knock the coon out to the other dogs if he isn't treeing right when you get to the tree and do not let him get hold of the coon at all. A few times doing that and they will usually tighten right up on the wood, only let them have the coon when they do it right and they tend to straighten right up.

Best tree dog I owned did this as a pup, Tied him back a few times while shooting out the coon. seems to have worked.
THYROID'S that solves ALL issues, See vet put on med now U got a coon dog. Solved that issue now lets move on. At least that is what my hunting buddy did cause his dog IS and WAS doing the same thing, he is sure it solved his issues see the more $ you spend the better your dog gets BUT.

Like others said no more drags or cage coons. Hunt him by himself and when he trees walk him back in there and put him back on the tree. Don’t leash the dog if he hushes encourage him. If he gets off of the tree give him a light switching and put him back on it. After he knows what he is getting in trouble for you can add bumping him with a collar to put him back on the tree. Then when he has this down just walk into the tree where you can see him and sit down and make him hold the tree for 15-30 mins. If you are consistent and patient with this it should work.

Had one years back did the same thing.
That one night she came on tree when she left I bump the collar good, she went back and trees, never left it again or back track. May not work on all dogs, but it sure worked on mine

Question..........have you by any chance shaken or squalled a coon out of a tree and let him rerun it?
When I first started coon hunting some 40+ years ago several people told me that was a great way to fire up a dog. I learned the hard way it’s a horrible thing to do to a young dog!!
If you’re going to knock a coon out to a dog make sure it’s dead when it hits the ground or at the very least does NOT get away.
Shake outs will make many dogs keep checking to see if there’s a track going away from the tree. At least that’s what I’ve seen happen to several dogs that have had coon knocked out for a rerun.

quote:I agree with this. Also, If he trees better with just the female, your male might be a little touchy when you're not around. And I wouldn't shock him. Hunt him either alone or with just the female and give him lots of praise at the tree when he's treeing.
