Dog trees then back tracks

I have a dog about 2 1/2 years old. He will run and tree with others and by himself on a hot coon. PROBLEM I’m having is hell tree for a couple seconds then get back on the trail go about 20 yards then come back and tree a little more. So In other words he just keeps leaving the tree and sniffing the track then coming back but won’t stay. He does this with his others and by himself.

The dog will bark his head off and get all foamy mouthed over a caged coon.
He also trees like he should if I take a hide and lay a drag for him.
So I do not see why he LEAVES THE TREE AND WONT TREE LIKE HE SHOULD.
I really like the dog and hate to give up on him. He’s just driving me nuts.

Any help or Suggestions is much appreciated? Thanks

My first recommendations would be not to hunt young dogs with him. The young hounds may be tested on staying treed. Personally i would start over but do understand the part of not wanting to move him. I would give him a shock treatment followed by a tone. Put him back on the tree & show him the coon. May have to do this a few times but use the tone first after the first treatment. If he doesn't go back shock him and put him on the tree. He should get to where the tone puts him on the tree. Later on a tone should put him on the tree if your not close to him. Good luck.

I don't believe your dog will make a pressure treedog and that's a must for me to feed one.

I have actually toned him back to the tree and he came back and sat down at the base of the tree. Anytime he trees I tie him to the tree or nearest one. And only two dogs he gets hunted with is a older male that won’t leave the tree and a female that’s the same. He does a better treeing job with my female

I've seen this out of dogs that are young, pretty much all tightened right up with consistent hunting and a switch. I've never had to use a shocker to get a dog back on a tree. Keep tying him up and if he comes off when you first get there switch him back to the tree. When he starts treeing, praise him and then also reward him with the coon. When the coon falls out, take the coon to him at the tree, don't let him run around trying to find it.

My main suggestion is to stop any drags and cage coon work. He doesn't need it. The main reason folks keep going back to that is because of how a dog does when he actually sees the hide or live coon. They tree their head off because they can see the coon or hide and it gets us excited. Your dog can tree by scent, he has already proven that so no more cage or hide training. Every time you do that you are teaching him to tree by sight and dogs that have to see game to tree will typically be loose around a tree.

I would hunt him by himself mostly. He will learn more and will gain more confidence by himself. Hunting a young dog by itself is not the most exciting thing but when you see some progress it makes it worth while. But if you are going to hunt him with others then I would only hunt him with the female that he trees good with.

Good luck

Ok, first thing. Like pastor mike said, stop showing the dog coons and hides. he is already way past needing visual stimulation. The best way that I gave found to tighten a young dog up on the tree is to tie him back about 30 feet from the tree and knock the coon out to the other dogs if he isn't treeing right when you get to the tree and do not let him get hold of the coon at all. A few times doing that and they will usually tighten right up on the wood, only let them have the coon when they do it right and they tend to straighten right up.

Like others said no more drags or cage coons. Hunt him by himself and when he trees walk him back in there and put him back on the tree. Don’t leash the dog if he hushes encourage him. If he gets off of the tree give him a light switching and put him back on it. After he knows what he is getting in trouble for you can add bumping him with a collar to put him back on the tree. Then when he has this down just walk into the tree where you can see him and sit down and make him hold the tree for 15-30 mins. If you are consistent and patient with this it should work.

Question..........have you by any chance shaken or squalled a coon out of a tree and let him rerun it?

When I first started coon hunting some 40+ years ago several people told me that was a great way to fire up a dog. I learned the hard way it’s a horrible thing to do to a young dog!!

If you’re going to knock a coon out to a dog make sure it’s dead when it hits the ground or at the very least does NOT get away.

Shake outs will make many dogs keep checking to see if there’s a track going away from the tree. At least that’s what I’ve seen happen to several dogs that have had coon knocked out for a rerun.

I agree with this. Also, If he trees better with just the female, your male might be a little touchy when you're not around. And I wouldn't shock him. Hunt him either alone or with just the female and give him lots of praise at the tree when he's treeing.
