How to tell how old a hound is...

I'm wanting to know how to get an idea of how old a hound is. I bought a dog that was told to me to be 8 years old. I have not gotten papers on him yet. Not sure if I'm getting the run around, or if the guy really hasn't gotten them back yet.

My concern is this dog has really hunted hard in the woods, and then he is laid up for 4-5 days. Like he can't or didn't want to move. He dosnt eat a whole lot. His teeth is what makes me suspicious. The front small teeth are ground down to the gums. I'm no vet, and only been around hounds for a brief time, but it seems to me he is older. I know 8 year old, he's not in his prime.

I guess just would like to know. I'd hate to expect bigger things out of this dog if he is 4 Or 5 years older than I was told.

Dogs age....

Take him to the Vet, have him checked out and a Good Vet can tell you within a few months of how old he is.....You really can't tell his age going by his teeth and their condition .
Good luck
Tim

Had a 2 years old dog my buddy raised one time and her front teeth were worn down bad almost gone so I agree you can't tell like that.

Chewing can wear their teeth down more rapidly as well. i had an american bulldog that couldnt be kept contained- any kennel or fence you put him in and wanted out, or was out and he wanted in, was getting eaten though... at 3yo his teeth looked like a 8 year old dogs teeth

If he was 4 or 5 years older than 8 he would probably be dead!

Dogs are just like people. Some people are slap wore out and broke down at 55 and some are still going strong at 80. Some dogs have had it at 6-7 yrs old and some are out winning hunts at 12. You can't always go by chronological age. But then you can't always go by papers either.

Old age

You can feel of his ribs and tell pretty close, for every year there will be a spread between his ribs starting out on his short ribs. It's very noticeable.

Can you put a picture of his teeth up on the board? Front, sides, Back..

Lots of things can change teeth but even if he was well taken care of at 8 years old his front teeth would still be down to the gum normally. If he hunts hard but cant move for a few days afterwards the dog probably has arthritis. You can get him meds that will help a lot if that is the case.

That is not the only thing you look at, the bottom teeth in the front, you have to look at the Canines and the back teeth to. I got to laugh when i get on this forum and read some of this stuff.......

I've been hunting hounds for 60 years and the only sure way I know is to write down the date when he's born.

How old are you 62?

I'm glad you find humor in my question. I guess some of us don't know everything. That's why I asked.

why don't you just look at his teeth instead of asking. shadinc is dead on. the only sure way is to know the birth date. the rest is a guess.

I'm not sure. I'll check my teeth and let you know.

Hard to tell

Ive got a 12 year old dog that this spring was hunting like he was half his age and looked it too, 4 months later and now his days are numbered . Went downhill in 4 months.

Anyways my point is last year i could have told you he was 6 and there wasn't much you could disagree by looking at his teeth.
