Please think before you answer
When trying to sell a young dog why is Pedigree and pictures more important than what the dog can do on the ground , please no one take this as sarcasm, but I've never seen a set of papers tree a coon . It takes a dog that is bred right ! I do understand it takes a dog that has a good set of parents but that they do not have to be Grand Night Champions to be coon dogs. I also understand certain crosses do better than others and certain stud dogs throw better puppies than others and certain bitches through better pups than others , but I think as coon Hunters we need to be more focused on what a pup can do in the woods instead of the pedigree . I have been around Coonhunters enough to know that talking pedigree is a big part of it , and it matters to me also.
So hears the point to think on , which matters most
1; Whether dog tree's coon and hunts well alone or with company ? No matter how it's breed
2; Certain faults are OK along as the dog is breed rite ?
3; For my hard earned money I would rather take a chance on pedigree rather than performance .

I wont both, the best dog I can buy must have the best pedigree that I can work with in case I decided to breed him/her, the best pedigree but a sorry dog im not interested, the best dog with a weak pedigree im not interested in either, why Seattle for one when you can find the total package!

a good look-hand in hand
i think one should take a good look at the pedigree to know what to expect even before you take it to the woods for a trial
way too many are passing faulty dogs off on account of a good pedigree then an unsuspecting buyer (without taking it to the woods) gets that dog and breeds it by pedigree and produces more faulty dogs.
those things should go hand in hand.
with out papers it's a lot harder to gage what the parents are and what they do. Pictures tell us a lot about the dog that is lost in the sellers description.
if we knew the parents as well as we want we probably wouldn't care so much about papers. if we could count on the sellers description of the dog we would need the pictures.

Pedigree and pictures.
The reason I want pedigree and pictures is because, first off I want to know where they came from and the pictures are because after I find out everything that the owner told me was bull crap, I wanna be able to look at it and say at least he's good looking.

Looks and pedigree usually are the breed and butter to us coonhunters.Ive studied pedigrees for many years.Ive talked to many stud owners and pup owners. After raising 7 pups that were not even remotely close to what I wanted. Some barked nonstop and were downright nasty in the pin.I was about to hang it up.I then bought a pup without any thought or homework. This is cleanest and quietest pup Ive had in 6 years.I guess the point of what I saying is a lot of us get caught up in pedigrees and think we know what we need or want.I randomly bought this pup out of 2 bloodlines Ive never owned and I like him a lot.
Let's do a poll with an explanation . which would you choose option 1,2,3.
So hears the point to think on , which matters most
1; Whether dog tree's coon and hunts well alone or with company ? No matter how it's breed
2; Certain faults are OK along as the dog is breed rite ?

Everyone wants the all grand pedigree. Although a very small percentage of hunters know anything at all about all those grand nites. They just know someone said "ol so and so" gets deep and lonely blah blah blah.
I respect a man who actually hunts with the dogs in the pedigree and selects what traits he wants for his hounds.
Give me a hound that will go hunting and tree a coon.. you can keep the papers....and the pictures too.
Well it's true, papers don't tree coons...but it also can be true that not having decent papers don't exactly help sell dogs either. I think most folks want to look at the pedigree to see if it might cross good with what they already have.
I also agree that a photo is important. As others have already pointed out, looks are about the only thing you can make sure you get right with a puppy. Might just as well at least get the one that looks like what you want.
I get that many coon hunters cant figure out how to post pictures, but what gets me is that most people on here selling dogs and puppies refuse to post the location. I mean, what could it possibly hurt to at least let the buyers know what state you are in.
If you really want the best chance of selling a dog or pup post good clear photos of the dog/s, the pedigree and again, at least what state you are in. Guys that refuse to do this usually end up being the ones complaining about all the phone calls that don't lead to a sale.
I'll give this a shot. For me, I want a well mannered coon dog. I have had them with great peds that were not coon dogs, and vice versa. As far as pedigree goes, I think it only proves what they came from, and what could be in them, but its up to us to bring it out the dog, if its there. Personally, that dog that trees coons and stays out of trouble, and does it right, does not have to have a big pedigree to stay here. Its a fact all world champions don't come off world champions only. A well mannered and brainy hound has a good chance to stay here. I don't care if they are dead loners or a with company dog, as long as they are in the hunt to win, and yes you can and will win with both types. Faults are in every dog, so that carries no value with me. Working past them and making a fault an after thought is all that counts there. Now for the money part, and you touched on what I like to hear come from anyone... MY HARD EARNED MONEY. For that, it only means to me that it is my money, and I am the one who counts when it comes to spending it. Big pedigree or a no name, if I am satisfied I got what I wanted, then I am happy. Sure we all want more at times, but I have paid top dollar for some and hey was awful, and had some given to me that were to be culled that could whip most on any given night. So as long as I am happy with the amount I paid, and the dog, it is all good.
I guess all said and done, there's no real formula to get the right one. Everyone has the own ideas and thoughts. What works for one won't for another, and please don't ever forget what region of this great nation you intend to hunt in most. Believe it or not, it does make a big difference in how well some dogs will perform. All hounds don't like swamps, as well as all can't take hills etc... This handler ain't much on them hills either. All said, its a handler and hound team of two that will rise up, or fall out. Most depends on you.
