Old newspaper articles from Wood County Coonhunters Association in Belleville,Wv

Thought I'd post these old pics from long ago! Sure would be nice to have this many people at local clubs now a days. This club is the oldest club in West Virginia. We are always looking for new members. Meetings are the 3rd saturday of the month at 7pm and costs $5 to join for a year. Hope to see some new faces this year! Our hunts and shows start in April.

Thanks so much for posting those old newspaper articles. On the second photo, I recognized two people that I knew from that era. One was Sonny Place. Sonny has been called home now for several years, but I sure remember him always having a good story to tell. I even remember getting to hunt against him when I was a young whipper snapper.

The dog I remember him being most proud of was a dog called Place's Trouble. He was a treeing walker, and Sonny did a lot of winning with him in the mid to late 70's

The other man who's name I recognized was Murry Carr and his dog named Sandy. Though I never remember meeting Murry Carr, a boy I went to school with and later worked and coon hunted with for 20 years hunted with Murry manny nights. I do remember meeting his son-in law. As a matter of fact, the Sandy dog mentioned in this article is most likely the same Sandy dog that is on the pedigree of the dogs I still hunt today. You see, back in 1976, my dad bred his first registered English dog, (Mayles Beech River Dolly) which came from Mr. Erwin Massingill's house. To a dog in Chesterhill called, Carr's Ole Zeb. Zeb was out of Carr's Driller, and Nt.Ch.Carr's Sandy, Sandy was out of Joe's Red Pepper.

I am still hunting today dogs off that line that Dad started with in the late 60's early 70's, that goes back to that Sandy dog mentioned in that newspaper article. Again Thanks so much for posting!!!

That is my old home club that I joined in 1959 or 1960 , and as a matter of fact Leon Yoke was my father-in-law for about 3 years or so . Yes sir we had some big turnouts back in the day . Sure brings back some memories .

Hey Dave,I hunted quite a bit with Sonny Place when I was a youngin. It was never a dull moment when you was around him. Sure do miss his jokes and tales!

My Gosh my friend, you are so right about Sonny and his stories. He had me doubled over laughing one night, while in a night hunt. A story I cannot repeat, but Oh my gosh, if it were true, which we will never know, but OH how funny. Sonny had a knack for describing situations that were hilarious.

As I reread these old articles , I was thinking about several of those names have gone to meet their maker. A lot of good old boys !

Hi Chuck, I don't recall a needle being involved in this story, lol. but then again, that was many years ago. I just remember laughing so hard at that story that I wouldn't have known if a whole pack of hound had just come treed right under my feet. Oh my goodness!!

Yes, you are right, many a good fellow coon hunters have gone on ahead. That Sonny was one funny man.

I've never seen a scorecard like this before,i found it in a bunch of old paperwork. Big paper to carry in the woods!! The other picture are some of our lifetime members.
