Feeding dogs.
Pros and cons on using a automatic feeder?
Thanks for your input.

I use one and at first the dogs eat like pigs but after a few days they went to eating normal. I got mine just to keep food dry from rain and snow

i really don't like the self feeders most dog's get way to fat on them jmo i like to feed my dog's myself that way i can tell if thier eating right or have any issues
I think for regular dogs great but for hunting dogs it's not the best idea. Might be ok in the off season if you don't run them but then you run the risk of them becoming over weight. You don't want to let them eat before you hunt obviously so if they have food constantly then you will not know when they last ate and run the risk of a flipped stomach.

Feeders
I figure its the lazy mans way of feeding! And if you do research there should be a good length of time between feeding and extensive exercise. But I would bet that if a man is too lazy to feed his dogs daily he probably is too lazy to exercise them regularly. Plus having a full feeder the bugs and mice can get into it. I never understood but have seen guys feed there dog just prior to a hunt...and watch those same dogs suckin wind and hitting the creeks for extra water all nite long! Seen dogs throw up feed in the box because they were fed before hauling. Im sure not everybody agrees Im gonna hear excuses but that's my opinion and experience feeding dogs for 50 yrs+.

Back in the 70's I used a self feeder for my beagles. What I found out about them was any adult dog you put on a feeder even after they had got use to having feed all the time tended to stay a little on the heavy side but not that much. When hunted hard they ate more but seemed to stay the same as far as weight, just noticed I needed to fill the feeder more often. If I started puppies on the feeder from the time they were weaned they never put on as much weight as the dogs that were put on the feeder after they were grown. I liked the self feeders but I think they work better if you start your dog on them as puppies. Just my 2 cents worth.

Nothing to do with lazy you still have to go water a dog every day. Like I said it keeps the food out of rain and snow. My dog just picks at his food during the day and will eat more after a hunt.

I've used feeders for 20 years...deer dogs and coon dogs. Just got to use good food and they wont get fat. The food is there for the dog 24/7 and they eat a little at a time. So, how do people think that a dog will have stomach issues Or affects there hunting...because they're on a feeder?? It's not like they gorge themselve right before they go hunting.

I like to use a self feeder for puppies from weaning age to about seven months old. I prefer to feed my grown dogs once a day, after the hunt. I have seen some use it on older dogs without problems but most dogs will get fat on self feeders, especially females that have been bred before.
I also like to put a female on a self feeder the last two weeks before she has pups and while the pups are nursing.

I want to know how much my dog is eating. Most of all I hate a dog that just kind of nibbles on their food all day. When I drive off to a hunt they need to eat when I feed them. There are a couple of things that makes a difference in a dog that looks like a world ch at home but falls apart on the road. They cant stress out on the road and they have to eat when you feed them.

I have one that barks a lot. Hes a fool but a coon treer. Im thinking bout putting a feeder in with him to see if it helps his barking. Im sure it may not but it might. I think he barks every time he hears us outside cause he thinks Im coming to feed.

i have never liked auto feeders all though i guess they have their place , when i worked out of town i had all my dogs on auto feeders and auto waters both and just had some one to come by and check on the dogs from time to time , i have had dogs to dig all the feed out at onetime and i have had them to piss in the feeder and rats will cause problems to and most dogs will gorge their self on the feeders even after several months , i like to feed dogs the same amount as close to the same time each day and it seems to work better for me and with the price of dog feed now i don't no if i could afford to use auto feeders back when i used them you could buy 2 or 3 bags for what it is going for today ..
