So I've heard a few fellas talking about taking two dogs and leaving one in the box and hunting the other what is the thought behind this process ?

I do it all the time! put a warning collar on the one leave in truck! BUT that's just me I train different than others.

Young dogs that want to hunt shallow and want to check in or not leave hard I'll tie to the truck and send Duds, than I'll put the pup back in the box, drive to Duds tree, leave them in the box while I squall or shoot. Turn em loose after a few drops listening to an old dog and it can make a difference.

I never put one in the box without turning it loose at all though.

It is a great way to start a dog that won't go with the other dogs and just wants to play around you. Turn the dogs loose and rebox the non working dog. They usually go with the other dogs as soon as they find out that if they stay with you they go back in the box; NO FUN!!!

If you're pleasure hunting, why hunt more than one dog at a time? If a dog won't hunt by itself, it doesn't even need to be hauled to the woods.

I have been with too many friends and on too many hunts that for some reason or another a dog has to stay in the box.
That dog in the box can ruin a hunt if it is barking and raising cain to get out of the box.
So I train one that in the box it will be quiet. That is the first reason I might leave one in the box, just to get the training done.

Ever been on a night hunt and a guy withdraw his dog and put it in the box. Have it bark its head off and disrupt the cast. All these things can be avoided with a little training and even then they happen all to often.

Ever be out hunting with a friend and run into another buddy in the woods. Now instead of two dogs you have maybe 3 or 4 even more. Decide to make a drop together and one or more dogs stay in the truck. Hope they have been trained to stay there quietly.

Some examples why I leave one in the box for training.

Then there is the other reason.
Time is valuable and since I don't like hunting a lot of dogs together like I use to many years ago. I will load them up and take two or three to the woods. I take out one and send it on and the other two stay in the box sleeping waiting for their turn.

I may have a trained hound and a young hound. I want to hunt them but not in the same place because of conditions. I might even have a place where I know the off game is not bad and I want the young dog there. I take them both and hunt the old dog in the harder spot and leave it in the truck while I cut the young dog in an easier spot.

I drive 50 - 100 miles to coon hunt and take 4 dogs. I'll drop them by themselves and the others stay in the box untill it's their turn. At times I'll drop a couple dogs, sometimes I just dump the box. Sometimes they'll bark in the box some. The dog or dogs out hunting dang sure better not let that effect them. I'd say if some barking in the box is ruining your hunt it would do more good to work on the dog that can't hunt if one barks in the box than to worry about the barking in the box.

You just want to withdraw your dog as well despite being in the lead so you can go back to the truck and grab the barking POS out of the box and stomp its stupid guts in.......

Do it quiet a bit. If there is a bunch of us that goes, usually 3-4 dogs. We all drop one by itself, after it trees. Put it in the box then drop the next one and so on. I've seen a lot of dogs that would act plum stupid with other dogs in the box ( even with dogs in the box not even barking). Keep hunting them like that though, and they will get to where they bust on in there as soon as you cut them.

My brother and I do it all the time,,we take 2 dogs,,but almost always hunt each one alone,,once out of every 20 drops we will hunt them together,,our female you would not ever know she was in the box,,she's always been that way,,, and she is wired 880,,,lol,,,the male will once in a while leave out a whimper or two,,but very tolerable,,but is getting much better,,I can't complain for only being 18 months old

Mr Bruce,dont it just get under your skin when you are trying to hear your dogs and all you can hear is another dog barking his head off,its worse than a babbler,i break all mine to not bark in the box and to not go to a barking dog but you will still have the run in with old Rover the house dog.

Bruce, that wasn't aiimed at you or anyone else. I don't like a dog barking in the box either just feel that a dog should ignore the ones in the box. Doesn't mean I won't do anything to correct the one in the box.

My buddy just came over and picked up two dogs to go hunting. He pulled up to the house to ask me something and one dog in the box heard a couple pups barking out back and started barking. I thought of this post and remembered if you ever say something it will usually happen to you before long. I yelled at the dog and it worked long enough for me to get back in the house. lol
