Terrible day

When i got home from work this afternoon my 4 month old blue tick pup that I just went 5 hours away to got less then 2 weeks ago was dead. I had such high hopes for this pup, and hate to see any dog die so young. I don't know what happened to him he was fine yesterday, and then dead today he was up to date on everything. To add to my luck I just gave away two Walker pups when I bought him, so now I am back to no pups. If anyone knows of any pups close to WV that someone isn't asking a fortune for please let me know.

Bad news, Sorry to hear, I know I would feel low if mine died

Yeah I feel like crap today now. He was a beautiful dog, and the perfect age to start hunting him in kill season, and he even had some good blood in him. I don't even know if I will get another pup this year or not.

Hate to hear of one passing before they had the chance to get in the woods. Did you contact the breeder? Maybe they have another pup they would replace it with, or know someone who has some. May be a long shot, but most all of us cooners want to help each other out in time of need.

Ok so I was going to wait until Monday to post this. Yesterday afternoon when I got home and found the pup dead, he was laying on the ground not breathing at least as far as I could tell. I was very emotional and tried to get him up and he never responded and did not appear to be breathing at all. Late yesterday evening when I went to get him to bury him I went back up there and he had moved. I immediately came in the house and called every vet around here which is only 4, and none of them answered the phone. I brought him in the house with no hope of him making it through the night because he could not stand. I couldn't get him to eat or drink at all, so I went to the store and got some soft food, and some pedialite to try to hydrate him. I had to put the pedialite in his mouth like I was giving him worm medicine. I also gave him worm medicine again. This morning when I got up he still wasn't doing any better but he would lift his head up. I again could not get a hold of any vets today. I kept giving him the pedialite and he finally started drinking water if I held the bowl up to his mouth. This evening he was 100 times better, and I even had him out in the yard walking around. He is still weak acting, but he is finally eating soft food again, and drinking his water. The inside of his mouth is still pretty pale. I want to apologize for being premature on saying he was dead, but I honestly thought that he was, and I really appreciate everyone who has offered pups at very good prices especially southern stuck. I think he is going to make it, and I am going to get him to a vet on Monday. I am sorry again for posting this thread when he wasn't dead, but I did think he was. I also didn't post otherwise until now, because I wanted to make sure he had a chance of recovery. Everyone on this sight has shown me how great most con hunters are about helping and supporting someone in need. I want to apologize one last time for being premature although I am very happy he looks like he is going to make it now, and I wouldn't trade him for any other pup. If he makes it through this he is going to be at my house no matter what type of coon dog he turns into.Again I am sorry, and thanks to everyone for support.

Thanks me too I just feel bad for posting this original post. I am super excited that I was wrong but feel bad for the post premature I was just really upset when I thought he was dead

Glad to hear you didn't loose him...I am hopeful that he makes it and from the sounds of things he probably will. I am very interested to hear what the vet thinks happened. Please post an update if you can. Whatever it was it sure happened quick. It could have been poison, but the chances of that have to be real slim.
The pale mouth makes me think of parvo. That too can happen quick. Did this pup by chance do any slobbering the day before??? I understand that is one of the first symptoms of parvo. If that is what it was you are really lucky to have him get through it...parvo is almost always fatal to a puppy. Maybe it caught him at the right time and his vaccine was kicking in, whatever the case, you weren't meant to loose him, at least not quite yet anyways...good luck.

I never saw any slobbering, throwing up, or diahrrrea so that's why I never thought to much about parvo

iam glad hes doing better.i had a pup i thought had died so i went dug the grave and when i went to get him my wife was there and said he aint dead i just saw him move,i felt dummer then a box of rocks.huffman theres a reason why that dog lived,do your best to make him the best coon treer that he can be.

Posted by huffman1988 on 07-26-2015 06:50 PM:

I am glad I am not the only one. He is doing great. He has been drinking water really good and eating his normal hard food like he was before this happened. I think it could have been worms. I was told he had just been wormed, so i was going to wait to worm him at the beginning of August when I worm my other dog, but the other night I gave him worm medicine and the pedialyte, and everything has been getting better since then. He is eating good now so I am going to be looking for worms in his stool. I was going to name him Huffmans Smokey River Blue Ice, but now I am thinking about naming him Huffmans Not Dead Fred.
