A Mayhaw is a small apple like fruit that grows wild in the south. They were abundant thought-out the south, growing in low wet areas, but logging has taken most out now days. There is still a few here and there where its too wet for the loggers to get to. Folks now raising the in orchards. They now cross breed and graft them to improve the fruit. The raw fruit is not tasty at all, very sour and tart. But they make the very best jelly there is.

Sounds like crab apples to me. I've had crab apple jelly it looks pinkish just like your jelly and yes it is very good jelly.

They are not crabapples. I make crabapple jelly from time to time. I think mayhaw jelly is way way better than crabapple.

Black berrys here in louisiana have been gone for a couple months now. Oh but they make some mighty fine jelly too.

Never heard of it until this thread...I am gonna guess and say that the pink color is added??? Any chance this stuff can be found in Florida??? I am headed to Marathon in two days...thought I might find some to try. I like finding new stuff...six months ago I had never heard of key lime wine...didn't even drink. I am tetering on alcoholism now!!!! and that maple flavored Jim Beam...I put that on pancakes.

You said you were head to Marathon in two days. Is that a place, a race, or the refinery? I have been working for Marathon for 30 years.

The only stuff Msinc would be looking for that get's refined would involve corn and he has plenty of that stuff up his way and I doubt he's looking to run any marathons. LOL

You are right both times Lenhart!!!!! I done some "refining" in my day and I still have my still too, but nowadays I mostly just buy it, one of my good buddies got locked up last year. They pretty much just wrist slap you the first time if you don't have too much of it, but the second time you get clapped in irons for about a year. It's funny you should bring that up...it was an old Pennsylvania boy that taught me about making sour mash whiskey. All this talk and thought has got me thirsty!!!!
The only Marathon I run these days is Marathon, Florida. It's half way down the Keys...I just got back from fishing and diving and of course some very heavy drinking at the tiki bars. I asked all around but nobody down that way knows anything about it...all the trees are different, I guess there is such thing as being too far south!!!
Maybe Mayhaw is a Mississippi Valley thing??? I wonder just how far east it does grow...seems like it would at least work in Georgia.
